Can wood blinds really make a difference in the fight for Mother Earth? Well the difference may not be as large as using mass transit, or obsessively recycling, but a sum of small changes adds up to a big one. During tough times people will be more likely to lean towards the more cost effective fake wooden blinds. These blinds are usually made from Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC).
Health Concerns
PVC requires chemical additives to get the qualities required for window blinds. These additives cause hormonal problems and some are potentially carcinogenic. This is a particular issue if you have little ones in the house.
Earthly Concerns
Greenpeace has advocated for the complete phase out of PVC because when it is destroyed in landfills it produces dioxins. These dioxins are bad for the atmosphere. Just recycle the blinds! Unfortunately, PVC requires too much energy to reform and virtually no company is willing to take the hit to be green. It goes without saying that real wood has no issues for the environment when it decomposes or is burned.
Extra Waste
Fake wood just doesn't have the strength to hold up to daily use. If you are constantly using your blinds or you have children or you have pets then you will find yourself replacing fake blinds a lot. The PVC does not hold up to repeated use. Real wood is naturally resistant to oils, temperature, and sun. It cleans easily as long as you allow it to dry slowly you should get years of quality use. Even after you're done with your wooden blinds there are no negative impacts from throwing them away.
Better Atmosphere
You know the feeling you get when your family is sitting around a large quality wood dinner table versus a plastic outdoor table? That feeling or aura of wood is hard to explain, but it changes the atmosphere of a room. No man made alternative gives the warmth that real wood does. Adding real wood to your windows makes the sunlight coming through them feels more natural.
Wooden blinds are excellent and I recommend them for every room of the house except the kitchen or bathroom where moisture can be an issue. In these rooms faux wood may be more appropriate or perhaps a natural textile drape. Other than those exceptions wood blinds are fantastic for the home and one extra step for helping the environment.
