In a time where computer games and consoles play a great part in shaping the childhood of the modern generation, traditional games that stimulate creativity, patience, and long term strategic thinking are becoming harder and harder to find.
There is one game, however, that stands out from the rest and stimulates the minds of those who engage in it. That game is Warhammer 40,000. It is popularly known as Warhammer 40k or just 40k. Warhammer 40K is a table-top miniature war game that tests players' patience and strategic skills, while allowing them to express their creativity in collecting and painting their armies.
The Warhammer 40K tabletop game, however, is not a new player in the gaming business. In fact, it has been around since the late 1980's. It was produced in 1987 by Games Workshop and has since then evolved into the worldwide sensation that it is today. The brains and creative talent behind the unique futuristic design of the Warhammer 40k is Rick Priestley.
Set in a sci-fi fantasy space world where interstellar travelling is possible, Warhammer 40k involves 11 races including the Imperium of Man, the futuristic product of human evolution, and the alien invaders who will stop at nothing to destroy humanity: the Orks, Eldars, and the demons of Chaos to name a few.
At the front line of the Imperium of Man are its brave and loyal soldiers: the Imperial Guard, strong, large in number, and known as the "hammers" of the Emperor because of their strength; and the Space Marines, the superhuman soldiers created by the Emperor who may be few in number but have firepower that could destroy anything that crosses its way.
The Warhammer 40k miniature tabletop war game works by letting players build their own army of soldiers, weapons, and machinery. The unique concept of the 40k tabletop game is that it lets the players feel the whole process of creating the army by letting the players assemble, customize and paint their own army. This way, each player owns a unique and personalized set of a Warhammer 40k army. Information on the various races are available in the "codexes" and the magazines and books published by Game Workshop: the White Drawf and the Imperial Armour.
The game is governed by a set of rules that can be found in the rule books, known as "codexes". Basically, the game works by having 2 or more players battle out on a tabletop battlefield, which can be purchased or handmade by the players. In playing the game, there are 3 phases of each player turn: the moving phase, where the player can move his models by a specific number of inches; a shooting phase, where the player can shoot the opponent's units; and the assault phase, where the player's units can attack in close combat. After completing these 3 phases, the next player gets a turn. The outcome is decided by a series of turns and rolls of the dice.
The popularity of the Warhammer 40k tabletop game has extended into several fictional works, including the novels produced by Black Library, Game Workshop's publishing arm. Several online games have also been created based on the 40k storyline. However, the 40k tabletop game still manages to be the most popular among all these games. And with 5 editions already in the market (the latest introduced in 2008), the 40k tabletop game is sure to stay.
The best way to get started in Warhammer 40k is to purchase something called a starter set for yourself or someone as a gift. The newest starter set for Warhammer 40k is called Assault on Black Reach and more information on it can be found here: http://www.paulymath.com/40k/assault-on-black-reach
