What are Do-It-Yourself Kits (popularly known as DIY kits)? These are a collection of required components to assemble or make a gadget or a product.
Types of DIY kits: This can be electrical, electronic or other commercial household gadgets which are useful around the house or in our everyday lives. There are also mechanical and carpentry kits for making furniture, like tables, kitchen cabinets, seating room furniture, housing structures etc
Motor vehicle kits: Some kits are for motor vehicle modification like for installing a fuel efficient system or a fuel conversion kit.
Compound design kits: There are compound design kits for: making a fish pond, building a tree house, Making a garden, you name it you can get it in kit form.
Electronic security and remote control: There are also electronic security and control kits for monitoring and control of different gadgets around the home and to provide security against intrusion.
DIY projects can be on how to build a house, make a compound, a fish pond and many other day to day products.
Besides the full required components, these DIY-kits also come with fully illustrated instructions, step by step guide and layout of how the product will look like at the various stages of assembly. These instructions leave nothing in doubt.
Some kits have an accompanying video which gives a detailed process of assembly and testing. There is usually a follow up facility such that the assembler can either call or write for further clarification in case there is confusion during assembly and testing.
The company can also provide online help information so that the assembler can speak with the technical team for assistance in fault finding.
Assembling services: The DIY kit supplier company can extend a service of assembly. In this case the assembler brings the kit to the company for professional finishing touches like, check up, tuning, calibration and elimination of any fault that the assembler might have created which could prevent the final assembled kit from working properly.
Semi assembled kits: In some instances the supplier company can give similar models of products but in different stages of assembly and completion.
Ready made kits: Some companies have ready made kits at a slightly increased price. But these are fully assembled and functioning kits in an enclosure with a full guarantee.
Guarantee: Usually because the assembler is the one providing the labor of assembly for the kit, the guarantee is limited to the quality of components and not to the final functioning and or use of the kit.
Very educational: These are very power full educational kits as they encourage learning by doing. As the Chinese proverb says: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." -- Confucius
This gives a very good exposure to future engineers to get an in depth learning of how things work. This encourages designing of new products by first trying them as models and then producing the actual product.
This is a very useful pastime and fulfilling hobby to give a deeper hands-on-practical knowledge and technology. The kits have a big advantage of demystifying the technology involved.
They give the assembler a sense of achievement. They boost the assemblers ego and can be a source of envy and admiration from his friend and family members.
As a business, the assembled gadget can also be used commercially. If you assemble several and sell them to your friends and family then you are in business.
How to start: To start with one needs to focus on a specific field. Suppose we start with renewable energy kits. These can be for do-it-yourself solar panel assembly or wind generator kits.
We can also have Vehicle conversion kits to convert fossil fuel diesel engine to run on green pure plant oil.
These can have a special appeal in developing countries as they immediately have an impact. Ie to contribute towards rural electrification and reduction of cost of fuel for transport and engine driven agricultural machinery. These can also encourage cultivation of plant oil crops.
Proper sourcing of the needed components and mastery of the technology involved can result into a high demand business.
Computer kits: Recently they have introduced DIY computer kits for control systems and other gadgets.
Remote control model kits: There are toy DIY kits for motor vehicles, helicopters, motor boats etc. these are kits which perform like real life gadgets but in model form.
Using such kits, you can assemble a model aero plane or helicopter that actually flies in the air and can be controlled from the ground with a radio transmitter. Of course it will not carry any passengers. These can carry a certain amount of pay load.
Robotics and cybernetics: Similar gadgets are called robots and can be specialized to work in sensitive or dangerous environment where a human being would not hazard to enter. Like bomb detonating robots. Such gadgets have been used for the first landing on the moon or in space to gather data. They can also be used in dangerous chemical or radio active environment handling.
Simulators: We also have simulators, where the computer simulates a real life situation and such a facility can be used for training. We have flight simulators for training pilots to fly planes before going on the real thing.
The gadgets are also greatly used by the film industry of make believe.
Computer animation : Another type of models have come in the form of computer animation where the computer simulates human like and real life like situations by creating a model which can move, behave and talk like a human in a simulated environment and can be programmed to do several things. These can be on computer screens. There are also computer holograms where the simulation looks more lifelike.
Computer games: Computer games can simulate real life environment like car race games, war games, motorcycle races.
