If you are new to the world of miniatures and war gaming, then you may have some confusion over the constant reference to scale in all literature and instructions to do with the genre. While there is obviously great importance placed on scale, it is easy to be confused unless the basics are explained to you, and it is something that one with even a passing interest in collecting miniatures or building dollhouses needs to explain.
First, the importance of scale. Scale is essentially the amount that something has been reduced from what the life size version would be. For example, many people like to build models of the Titanic - but the ship itself is not exactly of a size to fit in most people's living rooms! Essentially, what scale does is reduce the size of something without losing any of the accuracy of detail. If something is scaled correctly, it is just a smaller - though just as perfect - version of the real thing, and accurate scaling is absolutely essential in the world of miniatures. Getting it right is a must, as getting it wrong looks disastrous. To be true to scale, a smaller model genuinely must appear as the life size version does - but just as if viewed through the wrong end of a telescope. All the original details must be there, but they too must be scaled correctly. Get scale right and you are on to a winner, get it wrong and it looks disastrous.
Scales will be given in a ratio format, such as 1:24. The first number denotes the amount of the miniature that is represented - in this case, one. The second number means the amount of times bigger the real life figure is, compared to the miniature. So to get the full size, you times the first number by the second number. For a full example, if something is 2cm as a miniature on a 1:12 scale, in real size it is 24cm. Or, according to the first example, if something were a miniature of 2cm on a 1:24 scale, the real size is 48cm.
When you have grasped the math of scales, it is important to learn how they apply. In most cases, dollhouses will either be 1:12 or 1:24 in scale, as they are usually large representations of already large objects.
Sometimes - just to confuse things - scales are written in a different format. Taking the first example of 1:24, sometimes this will be written as 1/24. Again, the same rule applies in that one part of the miniature equals 24 parts of the real size. It is just a variation, the use of which varies between publications and manufacturers. Typically, the larger the size of scale given, the more likely it is to be represented in the second format. For example, many naval warships are billed as having a scale of 1/2400.
You may be reading this, as a newcomer to the world of miniatures, and be panicking - and quite rightly. However, this will become second nature and you use and browse scaled models throughout your modeling career. A need for understanding scale is more essential in war gaming - where figures come in many different sizes - but for standard dollhouse building, only three scales are really prevalent: 1:12, 1:24 and 1:48. Try not to worry and let it come, and soon you will not understand why there was ever a worry about it at all!
