There are many advantages to choosing bird houses and bird feeders made from reclaimed antique barn wood, not the least of which is its aesthetic appeal. In addition to pleasing the human eye with its rustic charm, it is just as attractive to backyard wild birds. Other pluses include:

Already 'hardened off'
Barn wood that has a silver color was once the outside of the building, and therefore subjected to many years of weathering. Conversely, interior wood will be a rich honey color brown. The heating and cooling that occurs during the seasons, as well as the changes in humidity over time have 'hardened off' the wood. The resulting cracks and checking add texture and interest besides making the surface easy for birds to cling to. Because the wood has been naturally aged and weathered, it has 'breathability'. A small amount of air exchange occurs naturally keeping the interior dry and free of mold and mildew.
Lots of backyard birds will appreciate and accept barn wood bird houses and feeders because they have a similar look and feel to existing trees in the area. Additionally, wood has longevity. It won't rust like metal, and it's not susceptible to breakage like plastic.
In the colder climates, wooden birdhouses provide shelter and a place to gather for warmth. Old wood generally has a thickness of ½" to ¾" or more, and thus has very good insulating properties. Birds huddle together as a matter of survival. A nesting box made with thick wood offers protection from harsh elements while giving wild birds a good chance to make it through to warmer weather.
Some of the antique barns from which the bird feeders and houses are made have been standing for over a century. Longevity is a built-in bonus of vintage reclaimed wood. Because of natural aging, no surface treatment is necessary. In fact, some paints and/or wood stains and sealers can actually be harmful to birds. Additionally, these products may inhibit the natural breathability and air exchange necessary to keep nesting birds healthy.
You can feel good about choosing reclaimed barn wood bird houses and bird feeders for your backyard wild birds. You will enhance the look of your yard, gardens and landscape while supplying your feathered friends with quality eating and sheltering structures. You will also be helping the environment in general by re-using and preserving a valuable natural resource.
