When you hear the word ultrasound it's usually related pregnant women or some medical test. Amazingly, the terms ultrasonic and algae can now be put together naturally in a sentence.
For pond owners, golf course superintendents, and industrial managers, ultrasound is becoming the method of choice for controlling algae without the use of chemicals.
The technology which originated in Europe has now made it's way to North America and has been in use for about 4 years now. Ultrasonic systems are now showing up in koi ponds, lakes, waste water lagoons, cooling towers, and water holding tanks.
Most people like ultrasound systems because they are very easy to install, (most units come with a float attachment that is tied off to land lines) and they can often control algae over very large bodies of water. For those that have algae on multi-acre lakes, ultrasound is quite affordable when compared to continual chemical treatments that must be applied routinely through the growing season.
Ultrasound works by sending out sound waves that will resonate, or match the frequency of the actual algae cells. As these vibrations build up in the cells, the algae will become damaged and often die, or at least have it's life cycle disrupted enough to where it can't reproduce. Eventually the blooms will diminish and go away.
In field testing and feedback, many algae types of been successfully controlled with ultrasound. There are several that are more hardy or mobile and may be more difficult to treat, but when ultrasound is combined with something like pond bacteria, which is designed to lessen nutrients in the water, most algae will have a difficult time in surviving and growing.
A typical ultrasound system includes a control box, which is plugged into a standard power outlet, a cable, and a transducer or pinger which is the only part that goes in the water. There are no moving parts, which makes the system quite durable and dependable. The transducer cable can be extended as well if power is not available near the pond. And solar powered options are also offered for remote locations.
One question that comes up a lot is how often does an ultrasonic system need to be used? Ideally once installed, the unit will run continuously since it's the consistent application of the sound waves that will ultimately damage the algae. Since cell algae, or the kind that can create green water, can sometimes be cleared in a matter of days. Other species like string algae may take a few weeks to several months.
In numerous tests, the systems are safe for fish and other aquatic creatures, and are considered to be environmentally friendly. To add to this designation, the technology is helping to reduce and even eliminate the use of many chemicals in algae control, including copper based algaecides where are now being restricted for use in some cities around the U.S..
Recent advances in frequency tuning and improvements in circuitry are likely just the beginning of a series of developments that will make ultrasonic algae control even more effective than it is today.
