I've always liked this analogy. Think of your favorite game. Chess, baseball, poker-whatever it might be. Now think of that game and add a million rules to it. Amongst these new rules, for example, maybe the knight is allowed to jump across the chessboard if the player pays a fee to be a "licensed" chess player. Or maybe a baseball player can organize himself as a Limited Liability Company and get five strikes before being counted out instead of the standard three. Or maybe a certain poker player--but not you, because you don't make the rules--gets to gamble using your money while keeping any winnings for himself. Tails I win, heads you lose. And because there are so many rules around, if you want to play your favorite game, you have to pay a professional to give you at least a superficial understanding of the complexities. By the way, any advice that professional gave to you cannot be used for purposes of avoiding penalties imposed on you from the rulemaking body. Oh, and if this weren't enough to make your head spin, the rules can change at any time without notice. That's right. You thought you had me in checkmate? Ha! Too bad you didn't know that my King gets to teleport. Still sound fun? Not really?
Well, too bad, because that's government and we all have to play the game.
No one knows how many laws, regulations and rules are on the books in the United States. That's right. No one knows. I mean that literally. So guess what this means. The game is rigged against everyone except those making the rules. And who makes the rules? Politicians and the interest groups that they enrich. If your restaurant goes out of business, that's tough luck for you and your family. If General Motors or AIG goes out of business, well, I guess that's tough luck for you and your family, too, because you're paying for the bailout.
America is the land of free markets and entrepreneurship. The American dream. This is a hoax. It's impossible to have free markets under the complicated set of rules and regulations that govern every transaction we make (legally). We don't have free markets. We have fake markets. It's time to wake up and realize that we have been tricked into believing that we live in a meritocracy. We don't. We wouldn't tolerate this in chess, baseball or poker. So let's stop tolerating it in life.
