There are of course, many materials to choose from when considering a kitchen worktop. Factors to consider will be affected by the available budget. Synthetic products, very often made from compressed wood chippings and melamine faced are, considerably less expensive than natural products, although they are often finished so as to resemble their natural counterparts ie wood, stone, tile or granite effects and are widely available. They are durable and easy to clean.
Natural surfaces will vary in price according to the effort required in their production and in the case of wood, the yield of timber from the tree. Granite and Slate are very heavy, inert materials and would have to be fabricated from templates using special cutting machinery. Once in position, however, they require very little maintenance.
Solid wood worktops are available in a variety of species and typically two styles. Whole length 'staves' which are joined across the width of the worktop and a 'block style' which are comprised of smaller lengths of timber along the length and across the width. These worktops may be cut and styled on site or in a workshop or factory. They do require a degree of commitment when newly fitted as an oiling regime must be followed to ensure that the worktops are sealed and made water resistant. This initial outlay of effort is well rewarded by the tactile warmth and joy that will be had by the worktop owner.
In addition to the kitchen, solid wood worktops, and their offcuts may be used extensively around the house. They make excellent window boards, bar tops and shelves. They may also be used in the home office environment as they make excellent desk tops, just add an office chair, a computer of choice and a filing cabinet.
Also a work surface, they may be used in a bathroom environment as a vanity unit top where they will frame a sink beautifully.
