Taboo game is basically a word guessing and party play feature created in 1989 by Hasbro. This is a group game which requires the other members of the group to guess whatever word or words their team member has in his card. The player who chose and have the card must give hints and clues to his teammates so that they could give the right guess. However, he must not give them the exact or five related terms listed on the card in his hand.
This is a play feature which is closely similar to the Catch Phrase play which was also created by the same manufacturer. In this particular play feature, the player must get his co-players guess the word or words through the use of verbal or gesture cues. With Taboo however, the other players are given the clues only through verbal hints. The player with the card must also be extra careful not to mention the five forbidden words to avoid deduction of points or losing turns. This is a considerably popular type of entertainment. It has even been the inspiration and basis of the game show with the same title or name. The show was aired in 2002 and hosted by Chris Wylde.
This package is inclusive of different equipment to complete the game. It includes few hundred cards printed with word or words on both sides. It does not actually have a fixed number of name cards because it depends on the game version you are playing. Other components of the package include the tray or card holder, the timer which is often in a form of hourglass with one-minute time span. There is also the buzzer, pencil and paper used for recording the score.
The mechanics of the game states that there should be an even number of participants ranging from four to ten. The players should alternately sit around the circle and take turn as the "giver". The "giver" is the player who would prompt his teammates and help them guess the main word in the card through giving them as many keywords as he can. He must do this just within the allotted time or else the team loses their turn.
The giver could be as creative as he can to lead his teammates to the right word. Singing is permitted but humming and whistling are not allowed. Most of all, you must never say the "taboo" or forbidden words which are also printed in the card. In case the player of one team says the forbidden word, the members of the opposing team instantly hit the buzzer. The "giver" of the other team then proceeds to the next words until his team mates could finally make the right guess.
