One of the most popular openers in the original StarCraft game was the "zerg rush." The premise behind the technique was that the Zerg player would build up a massive amount of low level, low cost troops as quickly as possible and rush his opponent before he had an opportunity to build a suitable counter-offensive. Done properly, the zerg rush could annihilate the enemy in a matter of minutes.
Now that StarCraft 2 has finally hit the store shelves, let's take a look and see if the popular opener is just as effective. One of the things Blizzard wanted to do with StarCraft 2 was not change too many aspects of the game. Many players had a "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" mentality. The new Zergling Rush strategy is a perfect example of Blizzard listening to the fans. The strategy remains pretty much the same from StarCraft. The primary difference is that with StarCraft 2, if the zergling rush is a failure, it pretty much means the end of the Zerg player's game.
The Rush - Defined
To start the Zergling rush strategy, you will want to have your drones start mining for minerals at the very start of the game. When you get to 10 supplies, you'll want to start working on a hatchery so that you can get your Overlord on the board quickly. Continue building drones until you get to 14 supply and the switch over to building a Spawning Pool and Extractor. Get to 16 supply with your Drones and then make a Queen. Once you have that done, use the gas from your Extractor to upgrade your Zergling speed and start cranking out the Zerglings. Once you get to 22 supply, get your Baneling Nest.
After that, it's time to begin the assault. By now, you should have a healthy supply of Zerglings. Collect them all and swarm the enemy base. It's very unlikely that your opponent will have the units necessary to take you on unless they're anticipating the rush. For this reason, it's also important that you learn to shield your activities from your opponent.
Zergling rushes can be difficult to master so I strongly suggest you practice with AI maps. Practicing this technique against a human opponent can be frustrating and actually hurt your ranking so it's always best to practice against a computer opponent until you feel confident that you've got the technique mastered.
