Of course the popularity of themed chess sets varies in line with broad trends in general fashion and society. Having said that there are of course perennial favourites that really never go out of fashion. The familiarity and popularity of the characters can help make chess more accessible to non players (especially young ones) and help get them involved in playing the game. Some of the rarer, limited edition sets may also prove to be good long term investments but I would not advocate buying a set for just this reason.
All in all a themed chest set can be a valuable and useful addition to the home providing useful entertainment, exercise for the brain and a nice decorative fashion.
