Though each of Homeworld 2's missions offers different objectives and challenges, certain strategies will help you in any situation. Offered here are some successful tips for some of its hardest missions. It's time to obliterate some Vaygr scum!
Mission 5: Gehenna
This mission requires a marine frigate, so if you don't have any, build two or three as soon as the mission starts. The Vaygr have a large force in the area, so you need to keep your ships within the dust clouds, or you'll be detected and the Vaygr will attack. The best way to proceed is by moving your entire fleet (with the exception of your mothership) along the left side of the map, taking pains to stay concealed.
As you move across the map, you'll come across sporadic attack. When engaging the Vaygr forces, don't let any of your ships stray out of the dust clouds, or they'll be detected. Also, your resource collectors will eventually exhaust the supplies located near your mothership. There are additional resources on the map, but they're outside the dust cloud, so leave them be.
As you move toward the objective, use your fleet to eliminate the first garrison and keep producing forces with your carrier. Engage the Vaygr fleet and target their shipyard with your larger ships, while fending their smaller craft with your gunships. Land your marine frigates and extract the Oracle.
Mission 7: Derelicts
As soon as this mission starts, begin collecting resources and construct a mover facility. Once the facility is complete, create ten movers and send them out to eradicate the radioactive debris located to your right.
While the movers are clearing the debris, solidify your defenses by building gun and ion-cannon platforms. Place them around your mothership and prepare for an attack: Vaygr forces will hyperspace in and launch an offensive against your position.
Be very mindful of the Vaygr infiltrator frigates: these ships will board and seize your larger ships, turning them into Vaygr-controlled vessels.
Continue to fend off attacks while eradicating the space debris. Once you've turned the tide against the Vaygr threat, attack and destroy their carriers.
Mission 9: Counter-Attack
The most important objective here is to get the Dreadnaught repaired and brought back online. Immediately send collectors to repair the Dreadnaught and use your available forces to fend off the initial attack. Once you've vanquished the Vaygr, begin to collect resources and rebuild your fleet. You'll also want to establish a wide defensive perimeter around your mothership.
The Vaygr will use hyperspace gates to bring in a new attack force; as soon as you're alerted to the presence of the gates, send out interceptors, bombers, or gunships to destroy them. With these smaller ships, ignore the initial wave of Vaygr forces and concentrate on taking out the gates.
Around this time, the shipyard will appear. Immediately defend it with as many vessels as you can spare, and encircle it with gun and ion-cannon platforms. Move the Dreadnaught to dock with the shipyard and initiate repairs. Continue to fend off the Vaygr until you've completed the required mission objectives.
And there you have some very successful tactics to use to emerge victorious in some of the hardest missions in Homeworld 2.
