How is the game show "Deal or No Deal" played?
I've flipped through channels and occasionally I'll watch a minute or two of the show but I can never figure out the rules of the game so I just change the channel. It seems like the contestant is the happiest when the money in the brief case is the lowest.
What is the object of the game?
You select one of 26 briefcases, each containing an amount up as little as $0.01 to $1,000,000... It is "your case", and the money inside is yours to take home, or if you choose, to sell.
You then select other cases to eliminate in rounds, something like six, then five, then four, then three, then two, then one at a time. The host describes it like this: The amount in the cases you choose to open cannot be in your case, so we take those amounts off the board, with your obvious goal being to have the million dollars or sell your case for as much as possible.
That is why contestants are happy - If the case opened contains a dollar, their case cannot be worth a dollar, and the more small amounts you eliminate, the better your offer.
In between these rounds, the "Banker" makes you an offer, to "buy" your case, trying to get you out of the game for as little as possible...
Nobody knows what amounts are in which cases, not even the Banker, so the game is fair.
Note, 1 in 26 odds may seem impossible, but honestly, that is why most people just want to win as much as possible...
Various special promotions happen, including a wheel where you can up to triple your winnings, and a "million dollar mission" where there is more than one million dollar case.
