You might be aware of the importance of technique, conditioning, and diet. But, here's a few tips to help your wrestling that you might not have considered.
1. Learn More Than One Style of Wrestling
You might be only interested in folkstyle wrestling because that is the style used in U.S. high schools and colleges. However, other styles of wrestling and grappling can help improve your folkstyle wrestling so it's a good idea to learn some of those styles as well. Greco-Roman wrestling can teach you valuable pummeling skills and hand fighting skills that will transfer to folkstyle wrestling. Freestyle wrestling involves a lot of wrestling on your feet and can help improve your takedown skills. Sambo, a Russian style of grappling, has some interesting takedowns and takedown defenses. Judo has some great throws that can be adapted to wrestling. You could even look into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and catch-as-catch-can wrestling. Many ways of taking down, throwing, and controlling an opponent are available in the various wrestling and grappling styles.
2. Wrestle Year Round
You can get in many extra matches by participating in post-season takedown tournaments and various freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions. More matches equals more experience which will undoubtedly pay off when folkstyle season comes around again. In addition, if you can attend a wrestling camp during the summer it will also keep you connected to wrestling and you might meet and learn from some very talented coaches and wrestlers. Of course, you want to avoid burn out so be sure you have at least a few weeks off from wrestling each year. For the most part, however, more competition experience and keeping wrestling a priority will help your wrestling to improve.
3. Make the Most of Practice
Practice is a time to learn new skills, practice skills, condition your body, and prepare for competition. Pay attention to what your coaches say and demonstrate. If you need help with a certain technique or position then ask. If you have a teammate that is good at a certain technique then ask him to show you how to do it. Set goals for each practice. What do you want to learn or accomplish? Perhaps your goal is to get a certain number of takedowns during live wrestling at that particular practice session. Perhaps you want to drill your stand up or hip heist technique as much as possible. If you are doing calisthenics or wind sprints then do them as hard as you can. Don't cheat yourself. Practice offers you a chance to wrestle hard and to try new things. Good wrestling technique will become second nature.
4. Watch Movies
Movies can be a great source of inspiration. Have you ever seen the movie Vision Quest? Well, it's about a wrestler so you might want to check it out. Try watching anyRocky movie and see how motivated you feel. I think many sports and martial arts movies are very inspiring. I like The Karate Kid and Kickboxer. Watch an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie or a Steven Seagal movie. Watch 300 or The Gladiator. Your motivation and mental state have a strong bearing on your success as a wrestler. Watching some inspiring movies can get you motivated and in the right frame of mind.
5. Read Books
I'm not just talking about reading wrestling technique or conditioning books. Read a book about periodization such as Periodization Training for Sports by Tudor Bompa. You can learn to set up your wrestling training properly. Read Sam Sheridan's books:A Fighter's Heart and The Fighter's Mind. Try reading Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz and Unlimited Power by Tony Robbins. You can learn a lot about visualization, goal setting, and achievement. Even classic books can be great sources of inspiration. Have you ever read Beowulf? Beowulf is a knight and he grapples with a monster named Grendel. Read about great men like Napoleon Bonaparte and General George Patton. Read Napoleon's Proclamation to His Troops in Italy and see how inspired you become. Read Patton's Blood and Guts Speech and see if you become motivated. There are many wonderful memoirs and autobiographies that will inspire you and motivate you.
These simple tips can help your wrestling a lot. I hope you keep them in mind in addition to your knowledge of technique, conditioning, and diet.
