If you're new to playing Scrabble or Words with Friends your first few games can be embarrassing; playing short words and collecting very low points are common for new players. This article has some tips for you can improve your game quickly, and start winning regularly.
One of the first strategies for a new player to learn are the scrabble two letter words. There are a selection of two letter words that appear in normal spoken language such as AX or TO, as well as a lot of strange-sounding words that are rarely used (QI or JO), or. However, all of them are legal Scrabble plays and they are perfect for racking up huge points.
Secondly, memorize some of Q words - particularly the Q words that don't use a U tile. The Q tile can give you lots of points, or it can sit on your tile rack unused for several turns destroying your ability to collect points. If in doubt, just use the word QI and be rid of it! When Q words used effectively they can create lots of opportunities on the board so it's worth learning a few.
Next, become aware of the Scrabble bingo words. These are six-letter words that can form one of a number of seven-letter words by adding another letter. For example, the word ARREST can make almost fifty words by adding another letter. Memorize a few of these words and you'll never be stuck for that fifty point bonus for using all seven tiles on your turn.
A way to stimulate your brain into creating better words is to shuffle your tiles. Shuffling the tiles randomly a few times on each play has been proven to allow you to generate more words; the human brain is intrinsically visual, and providing it with several different images of the same set of letters lets it work it's magic. This also has the added effect of driving your opponent crazy!
Finally, a Scrabble tip that doesn't involve Scrabble or Words with Friends - read more! Reading more exposes your brain to different sets of words and gradually builds your vocabulary. A bigger vocabulary means higher Scrabble scores. In summary - Learn the Q words, pick up some Bingo words, and shuffle your tiles. None of these tips are rocket science, but they make a big difference to a beginner's game. Try them out in your next game and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
