How often are we confronted by an impossible dream? When Jimmy Morris was young, he had an inspirational dream. He only wanted to play professional baseball when he grew up. The desire consumed him, as his God given talents and superior work ethics developed him into a potential star play for the major leagues. Unfortunately, fate would have a very different route for him to stardom. As he experienced his set backs growing up, this Rookie Inspiration became a signboard of motivation for millions more had he been allowed to live his dream when he was young.
Although Jimmy Morris was talented and obsessed with baseball, his environment did not really allow him to blossom into a star baseball player he had always wanted to be. The biggest stumbling in his path was his military father who had to move consistently with his numerous outpost postings. Just as Jimmy was finding his feet at a school, they would uproot to another part of the states again. Jimmy was never really allowed to settle down in life to concentrate on what he was good at and wanted to be. His final move to Texas when he was a teenager plus a shoulder injury suffered while playing baseball in high school practically ended any hopes of Jimmy playing professional baseball. His dream truly seemed like an impossible dream.
But that was not the end of this impossible dream. Many years passed. Jimmy grew up, got married, had three kids and became a school teacher. Not surprisingly, his passion in baseball has not died with the years. That made him a natural coach for his school's baseball team. His team from Big Lake High was an atrocious team. They lacked motivation and desire. At his wits end to motivate his players, Jimmy confronted them, after a demoralizing loss, about their attitude. He wanted them to have dreams and to be something. Instead, his players, who knew his amazing pitching talents countered that it was Jimmy that should lead his own dream to play professional baseball.
At first, Jimmy thought it was a joke, but to play along with his team, he accepted their challenge to try put for a Major League team if his team could pull off the impossible dream by winning their season. That was all that was needed to motivate his team. They went on to clinch their title in style, thus condemning Jimmy to stick to his own end of the bargain to try out for a professional baseball outfit.
He tried out for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays one season at a ripe old age of 35. Most of the try out participants were at least half his age. He even had to push a pram to the try out and changed his baby diapers while waiting for his turn. Most of the people were looking at him with skeptical eyes thinking that this 'old fool' must be trying an impossible dream.
But when he started throwing fast balls at the catch, everyone's jaws started too dropped. He still had a strong south paw arm that rivaled anyone in the league. One of the scouts came over and told Jimmy that he just threw at 98 miles per hour consistently. He had to be selected; otherwise the scout would be fired. The team offered Jimmy to start playing with their minor league outfits for start. Reluctantly, Jimmy agreed. It was not an easy decision. Jimmy's family was in need financially and he could not bear to leave his family for long. But with his wife's blessings, his students' support and most importantly, a deep desire to do something that he had always wanted, Jimmy embarked on his rookie journey.
One day, after playing for a long while in the minor leagues, Jimmy was finally called up to play for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. It was a dream come through for Jimmy Morris, who had dreamed of playing professional baseball since his birth. When he played at Arlington Park that first professional night of his career, all his loved ones came to watch him pitch. When the game was over, they had all witness an impossible dream come true.
