The grapevine for the Houston Texans is buzzing with a number of rumors about what type of player will be chosen in the draft. This NFL football team delivered some strong performance this past year. Now they will have the 15th pick in the first round of the draft that will be starting shortly. A strong defensive player would be welcomed by the fans and will add some fire to the squad.
Some experts are already listing the reasons they believe the club will some indications that this is the way that the organization is presently leaning. One of the hottest rumors is that they will use their pick for a linebacker. With more penetration and speed in the team's front line, those fans with Houston Texans tickets for that opening game will doubtless have even more to cheer about as the 2009 season unfurls.
Franchise is Still a Toddler among NFL Teams
The Texans entered the pro football world in 2002, but Chuck Watson and Bob McNair had decided to put the NFL back in Houston a few years earlier. The Houston Oilers club had been moved to Tennessee in the 90s and sports fans were looking for a pro group to call their own. Once the NHL decided to pass on the duo's idea of having a pro hockey team based in Houston McNair and Watson decided to re-establish a Houston NFL squad.
The franchise was officially granted to McNair and the city of Houston in 1999. That same year the construction for the team's new stadium was begun. The Texans were set to have their opening NFL game in 2002 in the world's first sports stadium that featured a retractable roof.
.500 seasons in 2007 and 2008 "not good enough"
The Texans finished 2007 season at .500 as they chalked up an 8-8 year. This was their best record since 2002, yet they still finished last in their division. The Texas team has to compete against Tennessee, Jacksonville, and Indiana. With competition like that, it means being good is not enough.
Of course the fans were stoked as they watched their club stay focused and on track during the entire year. This is a new franchise that is still finding its identity but the right ingredients are definitely present. When the team published the latest financial numbers for the 2007 season, it was obvious that there was no slowdown in the requests for Houston Texans tickets.
The 2008 season opened with high hopes for the Texans to do well and once again they hit the .500 mark. Jacoby Jones and Andre Johnson both won honors for their play as wide receivers in 2008. The Houston Texans definitely benefited from the abilities of these star players and Jones was the first member of the team to receive multiple taps as AFC "Player of the Week" in the same season.
Fans are quick to point out that even with a .500 season the Houston based team did a lot better than many of their rivals. The San Diego Chargers posted the same record and yet their team made it all the way to the Super Bowl this past January. A.500 regular season performance was good but not quite at the level of Indianapolis and Tennessee. This time the Texans finished 3rd among the 4 teams in the Southern division. Fans, players, and coaches were all in agreement that the team's play had remained fairly strong throughout the year.
The Opening Game May Set the Tone for the Rest of 2009
The new 2009 season is now set to open in just a few months, and Houston Texans tickets are already extremely difficult to find. Ever since the end of the 2008 season fans have been loud and vocal over what they think of their team's chances this year. There are even some highly respected sports writers that agree this could be the year for the Houston Texans to break free from the pack and grab the division lead.
