How is final table Hold'em poker (including heads up) played differently?
How can I improve my final table play? I've gotten to the final table many times but always seem to play it wrong. What advise could you give me?
As the number of players shrink and the blinds get higher you have to loosen up way more and become more aggressive than in the early rounds. You have to put pressure on the short stacks (especially if you have a decent sized stack.)
A good rule of thumb is you start becoming more aggressive in the tournament when the blinds reach %10 of your starting stack. For example, if you start the tournament with $1500 in chips, when the blinds reach $75/$150 you begin raising more and attempt blind steals from late position.
Stealing blinds become a more crucial strategy to survive (and win the tournament.) For example, early in the tournament when the blinds are at $15/$30 at a full table you might throw away A2s on the button. But, if its late in the tournament with only 4 players left and the blinds are $200/$400 or $300/$600, a standard blind steal raise of 2-3 times the big blind is usually good to win the pot uncontested preflop especially if the blinds have medium sized stacks. Early in the tourney no one is afraid of the standard 2-3 times big blind button raise but when the raise represents a big chunk of their stack they will throw away their marginal hole cards.
When there are 3 players left or you are heads up and the blinds are getting huge, luck becomes more of a factor. You have already made to the money. Now you have get in there and splash around with any decent hole cards. Becoming more aggressive increases your chances of winning the tournament.
When heads up you loosen up even more and play just about any "Ace or Face", pocket pair, or suited connector from the small blind as long as you can be sure you will not be raised by the big blind. If the big blind has been raising your limps from the small blind player during the tournament you might want to become aggressive with the above cards an raise yourself (most times the standard 2-3 big blind raise is sufficient.) From the big blind you usually do not want the small blind to see a "cheap" flop. If you have a decent hand, do not allow the small blind to limp into the pot too often. Throw in a raise. Overtime your opponent will be afraid to limp with marginal hands and this forces him to only enter the pot if he has a decent hand so you have some idea where he stands.
Now, the tricky part. How do you prevent someone from do this to you? Well, if you are short stacked and the blinds are getting big, you have no choice but to raise all-in if you have a decent hand (any Ace or Face or pair) and are in the small blind/big blind and someone min-raises you from the button. The blinds are going to eat you alive so you have to make a stand.
If there are 4-5 players left and you are medium stack and survive a couple of rounds you can let the raiser steal a couple blinds especially if there are severe short stacks at the table. You can let them get blinded out if you want to play it safe. But you can not let the button raiser steal too many blinds or he will run over you. If it is only a min-raise call a good percentage of the time see what happens on the flop. Most times the flop will his miss hand and well as yours. Sometimes you can steal the pot with a pot-sized bet on the flop. If you have a decent hole cards in the big blind you might want to reraise the button raiser. A lot of the time he will lay down his hand. Calling/raising his steal attempts will show him he can not run over you and should slow down his steal attempts.
Basically, final table (5 players or less) play, when the blinds are getting big means you have to become more aggressive and defend your blinds against the button raisers.
For a more detailed explantion pick up the "Harrington on Hold 'Em" series of books. They have helped my overall tournament play quite a bit.
Hope this helps.
