If the weather is not cooperating and your kids are getting antsy, it's time to find some inside games that can be done on a rainy day. Depending upon the age of your child, there are many rainy day games to pick from. Games that promise to keep your child engaged as well as bonding time for all of you. When choosing from the vast array of inside games make sure it is something everyone will enjoy doing. It is also great if you can find one that incorporates a learning experience too. Our first instinct may be to turn on the television or pop in a DVD, but this is really not in anyone's best interest. Stick with something interesting and creative. Rainy day games promise to keep your children's boredom at bay, while they have loads of fun as well.
Some popular inside games to play with you child or children are board games. Board games have actually been played by people throughout our entire history. With many variations like checkers, chess, Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Risk, backgammon, just to name a few. Rainy day games like these allow your child to learn how to follow rules, wait their turn, and contemplate what is best in their next move. Board games are usually played with a pre marked board and various pieces to move around the board. A set of rules must be followed and each player attempts to achieve a certain goal. Games like these promise to keep your children interested for hours. Or at least till the sun starts shining again!
Another inside game that everyone will enjoy is ping pong or table tennis. Table tennis originated way back in the 1800's in Britain. Known back then as wiff whaff, it was only played by the upper class as an after dinner activity. Popularity of the game began to skyrocket. Manufacturers then began to make the game commercially. The name "ping pong" was trademarked in 1901 in Britain. Soon after the trademark name was sold to the game manufacturer, Parker Brothers. After that ping pong took off in the United States, even recognized as an Olympic sport in 1988. Table tennis a.k.a ping pong, is played with two or four players. Each player hit's a lightweight ball back and forth. It is played on a table with a net running through the middle. When someone misses a ball, the opposing team scores a point. Table tennis can be a bit of an investment, but once you see the hours of fun it provides for everyone in your family, it is well worth the cost.
Another one of the rainy day games that deserve a mention, are games that can be played with items already in your home. A great suggestion is to begin with an idea box. It can be a shoebox, coffee can, empty cereal box, etc. Have your children think of everything they can do for fun when they are stuck inside. Write each down separately and put them inside the box. First you have an inside game for now, and a list of ideas for future inside games. Also a great interactive game is to allow your children to study you for five minutes. Then leave the room and put on or take off something that was not there previously. Re enter the room and have your children guess what the change was. Depending on the age of your child, all can play. This game promotes awareness skills and study skills. Also children get a big kick out of figuring things out! A final suggestion that promotes your children's motor skills and five senses. This game involves blindfolding them and placing something in their hands. By feeling the object and incorporating their five senses have them try and figure out what it is. This is one of those inside games that can lead to a lot of giggles. Especially when something "strange" feeling is placed in the hands of one of them.
The rainy day blues can be overcome. It just takes a bit of time, patience and ingenuity on everyone's part. Though the sun may not be shining, it doesn't mean that you can't have loads of fun right in your own home. Choose one of these, all of these, or make one up on your own. The main thing to concentrate on is having fun together as a family.
