By now, every online poker player on the planet has heard of the cheating scandals at AbsolutePoker.com. Most everyone has left that site, knowing that Absolute's source code has been thoroughly hacked. Who would want to play there?
But in nearly every major poker site, there lurks a different kind of scam. The kind that nobody can fix. I'm talking about the collusion happening between players, through cell phone hook-ups. Here's how it works: The cheater and 6 or 7 cheating buddies hook up on a group cell call. Each player is on the same cyberspace website, and on the same table. They communicate each other's hole cards, and the non-buddy(s) are left playing against only the "best" of the buddy cards. Now this does not happen in low stakes poker games, because the labor and work involved isn't worth it. But it's very different in high stakes.
Imagine a player (hopefully not you) who can afford a 100-200 game, and on a bad night, might lose $2,000. That loss x 6 days per week = $12,000. divided by 8 equals $1,500. per week per cheater. Not bad for the guys who band together every week and scam well-intentioned players. This is nearly impossible to stop, because each player can use a large number of aliases. Computer programs written to "evaluate" play are helpless to stop it, because statistically, the evidence never shows up. And, why would they care? On large sites, thousands of customers play every day. Do you really think they are going to carefully screen for this kind of cheating? Neither do I.
Play if you must, but this scam is real and if you play for high stakes, you'll eventually run into such cheating wolf-packs. By the way, the same thing happens in casino card rooms, with hole card information communicated by subtle signals. How do I know that? I was invited to be a "player" in one such newly-formed group.
