Hariti in Buddhist literature is a child devourer, whom the Buddha brought to the path of righteousness. Once she was brought to this path Hariti became one of Buddhism's foremost Goddesses. There was a time after the reign of Emperor Ashoka that Buddhism held universal sway in India. During this period the Goddess Hariti enjoyed great reverence in India.
According to early Buddhist traditions, Hariti was in fact a Yakshini or a female ogre. Legend tells us that this ogress in fact had started this nefarious activity only after she had lost her child. The Buddha understood her anguish and when Hariti came in contact with the Buddha,she was filled with great anguish for her deeds and repented. The Buddha then raised this ogress to divine status and made her the protector of all children as well as expectant mothers. She was also made the protector of the Buddhist Sangha ( assembly) as well as the guardian of all stupas, people and morality.
At that time Hariti became the predominant Mother-Goddess in the entire length and breadth of India, as the whole country had embraced Buddhism. This was from about the first century BC to the 2nd century AD. This was the period when the entire India and distant lands overseas were Buddhist and Brahminiam had not replaced Buddhism as yet.
Hariti during this period became a protective deity and fertility Goddess as in other Religions. But as a Yakshini she was also the consort of the Lord of Wealth and opulence, Panchika Kubera. It must be noted that Kubera was also the king of the Yakshas. Hariti as a important deity of Buddhism remained supreme as long as Buddhism flourished in India. Hariti is worshipped in all forms of Buddhism whether it be Mahayana, Sunyayana or Vajrayana traditions. The goddess had a changed appearance and name as the Buddhist religion spread overseas to distant lands like China,Japan,Korea,Tibet and Central Asian regions.
Hariti as a Goddess has her image decked in gold and silver ornaments and she is still respected in Buddhist lore. The image of the Goddess Hariti decorated with ornate jewellery is found in almost all Buddhist temples. At one stage in the history of the sub continent, Buddhism and it's thought remained supreme. But it slipped against the onslaught of the Hindu Brahmin cult and all but vanished from India. But we can hark back to that era and remember that the Goddess Hariti was the mother Goddess.
