When it comes time to take a vacation, cruises are top at the list for many North American travelers, and it's easy to see why: Cruise lines are continuously offering new onboard amenities (everything from new restaurants and headliner entertainment acts to new ships), cruise vacations have some of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in recorded history, cruises are highly affordable and let you sample several destinations on a single vacation.
Convenience is also a factor. There are roughly 30 cruise embarkation points in North America, so you don't have to travel far to begin your cruise vacation. Depending where you live, all it takes is a quick flight to get to your ship, and some ports-of-departure are even within driving distance. But what about those of us are looking to venture to a faraway place, and want to cruise while we're there? Here's a look at some of the more exotic destinations that you can enjoy on your next cruise vacation:
1. Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand have a lot to offer, with exciting cities, gorgeous beaches, eco-adventures and much more. The harbor city of Sydney is one of the most-visited travel destinations in the world, home to a long list of sights including Circular Quay, the historic "The Rocks" neighborhood, Harbour Bridge, Hyde Park and of course, the white-sailed Sydney Opera House. Sydney is also a gateway to other ports-of-call such as Melbourne and Tasmania. Not to be outdone, New Zealand features picturesque bays and harbors, cosmopolitan cities, plenty of outdoor activities, and splendid sights both natural and manmade.
2. Asia
With traditional festivals, ancient historical sites, delectable local cuisine and opportunities for adventure, Asia is high on the list for serious globetrotters -- and serious cruisers. Traveling over water allows you to explore the many traditions and sights that offer unique insight to the remarkable countries of the East. Cruises on China's Yangtze River take you the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and other iconic sights. Cruises to Thailand and Vietnam let you explore bustling cities such as Hanoi and Bangkok, as well as unwind on some of the most exotic beach locales on the globe.
3. South Pacific
When you want to take a cruise that takes you to a tropical island paradise where you will feel millions of miles away from the rest of the world, you want to take a cruise to the South Pacific. A few thousand miles east of Australia (it feels much further) you'll find Fiji, where the days are filled with sunshine, the beaches fringed by palm trees and the jungles are a treasure trove of natural wonders. Famous for its black pearls (a must-have souvenir for many) Tahiti's warm turquoise waters and exotic beaches make it the perfect place to indulge in relaxation. The Cook Islands, the heart of Polynesia, are largely untouched by the outside world and welcome stops by many cruises.
4. South America
If there was ever a continent to be explored, it is South America. A cruise offers the chance to travel along the same routes as some of history's most famous explorers, such as Magellan, Drake and Shackelton. Cities like Buenos Aires are European in feel, with fine colonial architecture, graceful avenues, sidewalk restaurants and fashionable shopping. There are also the remarkable Galapagos Islands, the mysterious Easter Island and the glaciers of Patagonia.
5. Egypt and the Nile
The longest river in the world and a source of water in an arid landscape, the Nile is the lifeline of Egypt. The fertile soil of its banks sustained crops for the region's first settlements, which evolved into the ancient civilizations and the modern cities that stand alongside it today. A cruise on the Nile is also one of the most relaxing and luxurious ways to experience Egypt. Travel the same routes that the ships of pharaohs and queens did thousands of years earlier, visiting ancient pyramids and temples, while enjoying all the modern luxuries that are a part of cruising.
