Expalin the forces acting on a stinger missile as it leaves the launcher and strikes its target.?
I'm doing a honors Physics symposium and I chose to do stinger missiles. I have looked for the physics on them but all there is are decriptions of how it works. If someone could breakdown what happens as the missile leaves the launcher to the time of impact it would be much appreciated.
The Stinger is a passive infrared, or heat, seeking missle designed to be fired from the ground to destroy attacking aircraft.
Basically the thing is a rocket first. The operator points the missle towards the aircraft and fires. The first step is to eject the missle from the launcher with enough energy to get the thing flying without injury to the operator. After a delay, the missle activates a solid rocket motor, which is the main thrust of the missle. Rockets are designed such that the impulse of the rocket motor translates to momentum of the rocket. All rockets from simple model rockets to the Space Shuttle operate on the principle of thrust impulse and drag on the fins to keep the rocket stable as it flies through air.
The Stinger has a passive sensor to detect and follow its target. This means that the missle does not emit any energy towards the target to get a reflectoion. Rather, it senses the intense heat exhaust from the jet engines of the aircraft target and the guidance system on board operates fins to steer the missle towards the heat source. The Stinger has some software to filte rthe signature of the jet engine and not chase its own exhaust plume.
The rocket fuel is quickly expended which establishes the long glide path of the rocket as it seeks target. It has a 3 kg explosive warhead and a self destruct timer in case it misses, to minimize the ability of the enemy to replicte the device from crash sites.
