Introduction
Planting pumpkin seeds is not difficult, but there are some important guidelines to follow. Planting pumpkin seeds can provide a great addition to your garden and is a quick and easy way to jumpstart a lush garden. However, gardeners should be careful to plant seeds appropriately for the healthiest plants with the highest yield.
Growing pumpkins can be a fun project even for inexperienced gardeners, with the added bonus of creating an autumn pumpkin patch and harvesting your own jack-o-lanterns. It's easy, and if well maintained, your fall harvest will be abundant.
This project does take a little planning, largely because the plants can spread a great deal as they grow. Planting Pumpkin Seeds was one of Lincoln's few memories of his early childhood in Kentucky. He remembered planting pumpkin seeds between rows of corn being sown by his cousins.
Growing and Caring For The Pumpkin
The pumpkin plant which grow up to 25 feet long produces both male and female bright yellow colored flowers with five petals. The female flower has a little pumpkin at the bottom. Remove the first two or three female flowers, the ones with the swollen ovaries, after the plants start to bloom. Allow a single fruit to develop and pick off all female flowers that develop after this fruit has set on the plant.
Pumpkins
Pumpkins require between 100 and 140 days of growth before the vegetables will be ripe and are vigorously growing vines that require at least six hours of sunlight per day. They come in an amazing variety of sizes, ranging from just a few ounces to behemoths that weigh more than 500 pounds.
Pumpkins can be heavy "eaters" so adding extra nutrients helps with their growth. Also they are warm-season vegetables that do well in low humidity and usually grow in soil of average fertility.
Pumpkins need a lot of room and full sun to grow, so plant them at the edge of the garden and allow them to spread on uncultivated ground. Pumpkins are deep-rooted, water-conserving plants that should be watered deeply and infrequently to encourage good vine and root growth. They are an excellent source of Vitamin A and need a minimum of 40 to 100 square feet of growing space, depending on the variety. Pumpkins grow as a vine, which means they take up a LOT of space
Pumpkins on the vine are a sure sign fall is just around the corner. Remember, pumpkins range in size form very small, miniature varieties to prize winning giants. Of course pumpkins are mostly orange, but many pumpkins are white, yellow or other colors. They are one of the few vegetables that will thrive under partial shade.
