Is my schnauzer puppy a miniature?
I adopted a miniature schnauzer from a rescue shelter. He's supposedly four months old today, though a vet estimated him at five months. Regardless, as young as he is, he's already 13" tall at the shoulder, and adults of the breed are supposed to stand at 12"-14".
Could he be a standard or giant instead? How big should he be at this age?
standards are 17 1/2 - 19 1/2 inches.
I'd be surprised if he gets that big.. he could be a slightly smaller standard, or could end up being a slightly larger mini.
ADDED
"5 months a puppy is half the adult size".. this is not an accurate statement. Many smaller breeds are almost at their adult height by this age! If he really is a mini, he may not have much growing left to do. If he's a standard, he's still has a lil more growing. Puppies grow and develop at different rates.
In MY breed, to determine adult height, we measure at 16 weeks (4 months).. and add 2 inches to that measurement. Not 100% accurate, however its prooven itself to be a fairly reliable way to guess. My breed is 11-13 inches. Obviously a 5 month old puppy in my breed is nearly at its adult height!
Try contacting some show breeders of both standard and mini and see what they say is the average size of a 4-5 month old puppy of their breed.
