One of the benefits of the new birth by the Holy Spirit is the ability to dwell continually in righteousness in the presence of the most high God.
"May the God of peace himself make you entirely pure and devoted to God: and may your spirit, soul and body be kept strong and blameless until that day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. God who called you to become his child will do all this for You" 1 Thess 5: 23&24 (TLB)
Righteousness is the nature or quality of being right or blameless or just. You cannot be right or blameless without a set standard prepared as verification model for comparison. To ensure that man in generic form, conform to justice or righteousness a set of godly laws was given to man to obey. These laws set as measuring threshold for man in the court room of God. So we can say that righteousness is a legal terms signifying justice (righteousness) in conformity with the legal (Law). Unlike the judges of this present world where anything can happen in their courtroom, in God's court room, only justice can be attained. However, God the Judge of the world declared that by human righteousness no man can attain salvation in the kingdom of God except through the womb of the Holy Spirit.
What Is Human Righteousness?
Human righteousness is when a man believes that his good deeds, or his doing what is right or his obedience to certain laws would earn him favour and eternality with God. While doing this can get you accepted by God, it can't get you salvation and continual presence with God.
"Then Peter began to speak I now realize how true it is that God does not show favouritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right."
While you can get accepted by God, you won't continually stay in God's presence as a result of sin.
"All of us have been sinful, even our best actions are filthy through and through." Isa 64:6 [TEV]
"But all have turned their backs on him, they are filthy with sins-corrupt and rotten through and through. Not one is good, not one." Ps 53:3 [TLB]
No matter how good and kind hearted you are, your nature still displeases God this is because in man there is no power that keep can him in the right before God. This is because the very nature of man is guilty of sin even before committing one. So don't ever think your acts can get you approval before God. For you can be sure your acts wont, just as mentioned earlier- even our best actions are filthy through and through. His righteousness is free and can be attained if you desire it.
Righteousness is also the conformity of man's will to God's revealed truth or will. That is the totality of God's divine package for man. It is whatever has been appointed by God to be acknowledged and obeyed by man, Mtt 3:15, 21:32. That is why Jesus categorically obeyed traditions even when it was not necessary.
