As far as the guitar is concerned, the word action stands for the height of its strings from the fretboard. An appropriate action adjustment enables a guitarist to play comfortably and smoothly. If a guitar has strings far from the fingerboard, then it has fairly high action strings. On the contrary, the instrument with a lower action has stings quite near to the fretboard. Many guitarists prefer and enjoy playing on an instrument with low action. The procedure for lowering guitar action is not at all a tough task and you can do it at home by yourself.
Higher strings are very hard to push down and can hurt your fingers. A guitar with low action or small strings offers easy playability. Lowering guitar action means bringing down the height of is strings by reducing the saddle. The height of strings can be determined by measuring the distance between the top of the fret and the underneath of a string. The first thing you have to do for lowering the action of your guitar is to check whether all other adjustments like truss rod and neck are correct. It should be noted that it is not a good idea to lower the strings by tightening the truss rod as this adjustment can result in buzzing of the neck.
Take out all strings from the fretboard and then get the saddle out of the guitar. Usually, you can easily remove it with your hands. If cannot, use nippers or a pair of pliers to take out the saddle. With a pencil and ruler, draw a line on the saddle to indicate the height you want. Next step is to sand away the bottom of the saddle to get the preferred string height. Fix sandpiper to a flat surface and rub the saddle back and forth on it to remove some material from its bottom. Continue sanding until the line is rubbed away.
Too much lowering can cause buzzing from the strings. Make sure that the bottom of the saddle is flat and its sides are at 90-degree angle. Put the saddle back into the bridge. Guitars with tune-o-matic style bridges can be lowered by tightening the screws found on the end of the bridge.
