What the best 1000 point army and tactics for Warhammer 40k space marines?
What would be the best 1000,1500 and 2000 point army to have with these Space marine models
Magus calgar and 1 honor squad
Chef Liberian and 1 sterngard squad
A land Raider vindicator, drop pod and a Rhino
3 half tactical squad, Assault squad, and devastator squad.
A full scout squad and a half one with sniper's.
and a terminator assault squad and a captin with terminator Armor.
I'm asking cause I make the worst army's and always do the stupidest things so advice and tactics would be great.
What the best army is is often in the eyes of the beholder, what works really well for some peoples tactical senses may not for others. Example: I play space marines with a lot of long range firepower (mostly plasma cannons) and my friend plays with a khorne bezerker based army. though we both are good with our own armies, we faired very poorly when we tried swapping them.
With this is mind, ill give you a few pointers on how to form your army, because my "best list" might not work for you.
So first of all you need to decide what sort of army your intention is to make. Close combat, Long range or balanced. A long range army of SM's is great for fighting other ranged troops (Gaurd,Tau) with the right setup but can fare poorly against close combative trrops if they get in fast, wheras opposed close ranged troops can get chewed up fast by long ranged firepower (khorne bezerker VS plasma cannon = plasma cannon 1, zerkers 0).
The best advice i can ever really give is DO NOT go for powerful statlines or massive guns as your sole choice. I would never take calgar because of the massive price he costs, same stands for terminators (when youve seen a squad of terminators vaporised under the template of a 5 pt gun, youll know why).
Start out by picking a solid core of troop choices, since they are the most multiuse and came fill a few roles that way. I take 3 troop choices in my 1.5k list, Two 10 man tatical squads which are split using the combat squad rule into a fire team and an assault team (Sarge and flamer + 3 boters in one squad, heavy weapon + 4 bolters in another) and for the last 9 scout snipers with sargeant telion, again split so i can cover more area.
This core gives me a mix of objective holding, anti-personell and anti armour firepower and so should help with any situation you find yourself in. As for HQ units, i have a rule that they never exeed 200 pts in a SM army. Yes they are powerful and can do some decent damage under the right circumstance, but its rare for them to buy themselves back after you look at guy + retinue + transport, so i prefer to take a cheap chaplain or librarian. In your case (to try and use what you already have) i would say a chaplain with jump pack attached to a 9 man assault squad, which is always nasty on the charge and can deal with damaged units quite easilly (and not half bad for nuking tanks either). alternativly, you could remove their jump packs and mount them in a rhino or drop pod.
Elites should be used to plug up holes that you have already found in your army or to fulfill a certain need (ironclad dreadnought for planetstrike attacker). My army makes use of a lot of tanks and anti-personell guns with templates, so in this section is use 2 dreadnoughts,who can be used in tank busting or close combat roles (great for holding up enemies, not so good at actually finishing off a squad though) and for HQ slaying an allied vindicare assasin.
The role of fast attack will vary dependant in what you hope to acheoive with your army. In a close combat army you will be looking at troops to attack earleir on (assaaault squad, land speeder storm, bikes) where in a longer range army it may be more suited to objective denial and fire support/ tank hunting (landspeeders).
Heavies, go for gold
. Its here i like to spend a larger amount of my points on tanks, but i would steer clear of landraiders unless your going to be making the most use of their transportatoion abilities to move terminators. My loadout here is a vindicator (all purpose death bringer), Whirlwind (great for pinning squads or attacking weaker units that rely on cover with the inceduries (gaurdsmen and kroot)), and then a full sized devestator squad with 2 plasma cannosn and two missile launchers, the bolters will usually be out of range and are just there to eat bullets.
well, hope this has given you some food for thought, but remember that there is no ultimate game winning army. What your opponent had and what the dice roll up are always a big factor in how well you do. Youll find your best army in time, so for now keep playing trial and error.
