There is no other board game like chess that exists in the world. The game, on most accounts, is over 1500 years old, and while it has gone through several modifications over the years, it has been growing over the past several years.
For most people sitting down to a chess match is a moment that they look forward to all day. It is a moment that starts with a properly set-up chess board.
Positioning the Chess Board to Start
The first item to address is the placement of the chess board in front of the players. When the board is placed down, there should be a white square in the lower right corner. This should be the case for both players. While this does seem trivial in nature, it should be noted that this is the regulation called out be FIDE in the "Laws of Chess."
Arranging the Pieces
With the chess board positioned, next item is to lay down the pieces to ready for a match. The pieces used in the current incarnation of chess are: King, Queen, Bishop (2), Knight (2), Rook (2) and Pawns (8). Each side will start with a total of 16 pieces. For each color, the second column from the bottom will hold the pawn, all 8 in line with one pawn in a square. For the column that sits closest to the player, the remaining 8 pieces are arranged. Intuitively, it is assumed that the set-up would be the same left-to-right, regardless of starting side. That is unfortunately not the case. When the player is the white side, the order is Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, and Rook. This set-up is left to right. The difference between the white and black side is that the positions of the King and the Queen are reversed. Ultimately, when looking at a board at the start of match, each piece is "facing-off" against its equivalent on the other side.
The set-up is the same regardless of what type of chess set is being used. This article is not going to go into the difference in appearance of the Staunton chess set (the standard design for tournaments) pieces.
There is no specific penalty laid out if a chess match begins and the chess pieces are not arranged correctly. Still, it is in good faith to confirm that the board set-up correctly for before a match begins. Remember that the set-up is similar to in feudal times, the castle (the Rook pieces) provide the outer protection. Next the Knights lead in the army. Then Bishops negotiate on behalf of the King. Finally are the King and Queen are in the middle. The King will always start on a square that is opposite his color and the Queen on one that is her color.
Keeping these three items in mind when setting up a chess board will ensure that a good foundation has been set when starting a match, playing one of the most heralded games on earth.
