"It was a dark and stormy night, and the wind was howling like the banshees". How would you express this above scene if you were telling a story? You could not simply say the words because your audience whether they are kids or adults will not be entertained. You will not be able to keep them interested enough to get them involved in your story. You must be expressive, you must be passionate, and you must make your words come to life to leave you audience spellbound. What are some things you can do to have the undivided attention of your audience when telling a story?
Be expressive with your words to express the mood:
In the above example two things are happening, you are describing the scene and you are giving an example of what's happening in that scene. You have to find a way to get this across to your audience. Don't be concerned about looking foolish or silly, when you're telling a story your only goal is to keep the attention of your readers so they are eager to find out what will happen next. Use a monotonous voice when describing the mood and swoosh your arms in a way that indicates the wind, this will help your readers understand the mood you're trying to set.
Learn to say what you want without looking at the page:
You will distract your audience if you keep looking down at a sheet of paper to remember words. You want your readers to believe they have your full attention, you want to make constant eye contact with the audience rather they be a big or small audience, doing this will make them believe you're completely in the moment and enthralled with the story you're telling them. If I am listening to someone tell a story I have to believe their words, and a way I will believe their words is if they are able to make the words their own.
Talk slowly and evenly:
In the example I gave above you would not want to read this as you would a normal book or any kind of text. These words are meant to be spoken in a fashion where you're able to take the time to inject each word with the proper emotional energy and expressions so each word packs a punch. "It was a Dark and ssssstormy night, the WIND was hhhhhowwwwwling like the banshees. Take the proper time to express each word that requires expression. This will serve to keep your audience interested.
Being able to express your words in a way that you make them come to life is the sign of a true story teller. When you look up at your audience you want to see a bunch of bug eyes and leaned forward heads looking in your direction. Speaking your words without looking at a page, being expressive with your words so that you represent the mood or the feeling in the story and taking the time to read each word the way it deserves to be read will help you tell stories in a way where they will seem like your own creation.
Effective speaking is a lot like preparing for a wedding. All the planning in the world can't assure there will not be problems. But preparing speaking disasters and knowing in advance how to tackle speaking disasters means they do not have to ruin your presentation.
