Ice hockey is one of the most popular sports played in the US. It is the most challenging of sports to learn since players have to learn to skate on ice. Learning the fundamentals of ice skating, i.e. skating forward, stopping, and turning in both directions will help learn how to play ice hockey.
Ice hockey is a rough game. Players will take a number of falls and bumps on hard ice during a match. Normally, this would cause a lot of injuries, broken bones, sprained muscles, etc. However, with the right kind and quality of Ice Hockey Equipment, injuries can be controlled largely.
General equipment consists of the Ice Hockey Sticks. Originally made from wood and metals, hockey sticks of today are made of carbon fiber and graphite to ensure flexibility and long lasting quality. Gloves are usually of two types: blocking glove for puck deflection and catching glove worn by the goal tender to catch the incoming puck. Helmet is protection for the head and face from fatal injuries due to slipping and falling. Helmets come with a cage or visor and mouth guard which protect the face and mouth from the flying impacts of the puck.
Neck Guards are protection for the neck and throat from the impacts of flying puck, and hockey sticks and skates during a fall. Shoulder Pads protect the torso and spine and Elbow Pads protect the forearm and triceps from injuries due to collisions or fall and flying puck.
The knee is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body. Protecting the knee is crucial to a player since a knee injury can literally terminate a player's career prematurely. Knee Caps and Shin Guards are essential items of Ice Hockey Equipment.
Without a good pair of Ice Skates, ice hockey cannot be played. Players wear skates with less curved blade to facilitate better leg movement. Goaltenders wear skates designed to help them move sideways. The skates are nearer to the ground and have better balance.
Hockey Pants, designed with cushioning for the thighs and legs are essential items. In addition, men are required to wear jockstraps and women, pelvic protectors.
Ice Hockey Equipment for Goal Tending consists of special items worn by the goalies for protection and deflecting pucks. The Goal Stick, which has a larger blade than other hockey sticks, is used for blocking and playing the puck. Goal Skates, which have thicker blades and larger radius, help goalies to slide and stop puck with pads.
Goalie Helmet or Mask with cages and mouth guards protect from impact of flying puck. Blockers are worn on one hand to help hold the stick firmly. Goal Pants and Jocks are specially designed to protect the pelvis and lower-pelvis area.
