And these days, journalism degrees are preferred by many employers, since degrees in English mostly focus on English literature rather than journalistic skills. However, I've known many students that majored in English and worked on campus newspapers, magazines, etc. (or started their own) that have since become employed in various capacities by newspapers and magazines.
However, I should also note that I've known students with many different majors (art history, religion, etc.) who now have established careers in print journalism. These degrees have served them well; indeed, many of them were hired because of their specialized knowledge and ability to write articles or columns that require some background in a particular field of study.
