Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard Heavy weapons team?
What is the best IG Heavy weapons team and why?? ( mortar, heavy bolter....ex)
Given that the question is in "Board games", I think it's safe to say that the question relates to the tabletop miniatures game.
The options for heavy weapons teams are heavy bolter, autocannon, missile launcher, mortar and lascannon. Each is best at dealing with a different sort of target: heavy bolters are best at mowing down elite infantry, whilst mortars are great at tackling massed swarms; autocannon handle heavy infantry or light tanks, whilst lascannons are the choice against medium and heavy tanks. Missile launchers are the only flexible choice, able to fire frag missiles or krak missiles, each performing competently against both infantry and armour respectively, but neither one performing as well as its more specialized equivalent.
In armies that field large numbers of heavy weapons teams, it's a good idea to include a decent spread of both anti-infantry and anti-armour capability. This is common in armies that are heavy on infantry and low on armour themselves.
However, in armies that are strong on armour themselves, it's worth remembering the old adage that the best anti-tank weapon is another tank. So if you've already got plenty of tanks it's worth focusing your limited heavy weapons teams on anti-infantry weapons such as heavy bolters or mortars.
I personally favour the mortar. Indirect fire is a much-underrated advantage against rapid armies that cling to cover (like Eldar) and their ability to "range" (i.e. use the first shot to make the second and third shots in a heavy weapons squad more accurate) can make an accurate shot devastating or an inaccurate shot less so.
That said, mortars are best concentrated in heavy weapon squads (for the reasons described), so don't be afraid to add heavy bolters or missile launchers to the infantry squads, where - without the support of other mortars - they effectively operate independently.
Having said that, remember that the new rules for combining squads into platoons on the tabletop mean that squads with mortars can gain the advantages of mortar squads by combining three mortars into one platoon.
