There are as many dieting programs as there are experts. And with all those opinions out there, you know there has to be rules to follow. Well, if you're one of the 95% (or so they say) of dieters who fail, then maybe it's time to break those weight loss rules that don't work for you. Maybe it's time to undo the bonds of dogma.
But first, let's be clear: I'm no weight loss guru. All I hope to do is offer some "common sense" advice and thoughts on what I have experienced. That's all.
And common sense tells me that if you've been unsuccessful in losing weight, then it's time to sit down and do a deep dive into "why not." But even before that, if the hole you are in keeps getting deeper (not only won't the weight come off, your fat cells are inviting more friends for a sleepover); then let's stop digging. First rule of getting out of a hole you dug yourself into, is to stop digging.
And if the traditional methods are not working for you, then the traditional methods do not work...for you. If what the experts tell you do aren't getting it done, you have nothing to do lose by doing the opposite.
For example...
1. Eat a wide variety of foods, to include a rainbow of fruits and veggies.
What if eating all that food is inadvertently putting you in a caloric surplus? Why do you have to force yourself to eat a little bit of everything, and in process, eat everything? I like corn, carrots, leafy green lettuce, tomatoes, garlic, red onions, and bell peppers. I like bananas, apples, and strawberries. Occasionally I like peaches and oranges. That's it.
I try to eat a rainbow but more often than not it meant eating more. It meant eating some stuff I did not care for. And that meant eating more of what I did want. In the end, it made more sense for me to just stick to what I like - in smaller portions.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a commoner, and a vow of poverty before bed.
A great rule - that is unless you like eating a big lunch or dinner. Because more often that not, you will eat a big lunch or dinner on top of the big breakfast. Don't fit yourself into a straitjacket routine if you know it's not going to work for you. It's your lifestyle.
There's a local guy here that went from 360 plus lbs to just under 180lbs. WOW. It took him 3 years and he's kept it off. He had a paradigm shift that allowed him to reboot his whole outlook on life. Great going. Here's the salient point - this guy liked to eat a big lunch, and in Hawaii, every lunch plate comes with 2 big scoops of white rice. He would eat a big breakfast with the plan to eat a small lunch and dinner. There's no such thing as a small lunch here. He could not never control his caloric intake because this rule wasn't for him. He needed to break it.
Lately, my breakfast has been 1 banana, 4 strawberries, 1 yogurt, and enough POG juice to make a smoothie. I munch on Costco's granola snack mix on the way to work. That's more than enough energy for me. I have decent size lunch and like a big dinner. I drink a lot of water throughout the day.
3. What matters is how you feel and look, not what the scale says.
I have always recommended using the mirror and the clothes you want to fit into as your guide. I generally recommended not stepping on the scale. Too many dieters, it seems to me, become slave to the scale and obsess over every pound lost or gained. They step on a scale and freak out over the pound they gained over the last day.
Still, if you're not stepping on the scale and your weight loss program is a wreck, then step on the scale. There is this rule: You inspect what you expect and expect what you inspect. Measure your progress on the scale, but don't obsess.
You should weigh yourself first thing in the morning and record it. And if you're up a lb, it's no biggie; you simply cut back on a few calories that day. But, please don't obsess over it, rather adjust and take the long view - that is, where are you vis a vis 1 week ago.
4. Have a cheat day or don't deny yourself what you love.
Why? I suppose the thought process is that the more you deny yourself a treat, the more you crave it. They say that absences makes the heart grow fonder - I suppose. Or, maybe out of sight, out of mind would be the better mindset for getting rid of foods that are not good for you.
For the cheat day, you do great for 6 days and wreck it on the 7th - nice. You don't need a cheat day. You need to eat well and smart for 7 days. Because really, 2 steps forward and 1 step back is terrible on the psyche. You're better off moving 1 step ahead methodically. The best diet is eating well and eating smart everyday.
Lastly, I actually don't know any gurus that recommends this but somewhere - somehow - people have come to equate weight loss with dieting with diet sodas and drinks. That's just no good. Way, way, way back in my army days, we used tease some of our friends who would get a diet coke and calzone "cuz they wuz" cutting calories. Yeah, that worked - not.
0 calorie drinks become an excuse to overeat. Again, that's not good. I say, "go water" (cup of grape juice has over 40 grams of sugar - no juices, go for water).
Do these apply to you? I don't know. But you know.
If it's not working, blow it up...and start over.
