Any run not traced to the batting of a batsman but counted towards the batting side due the fault by the fielder or the bowler is known as 'extra run' or 'sundry'. Excess extra runs in a game reflect the untidy bowling of a bowler. Extra runs can be granted due to bye, leg bye and penalty - caused by faults of the fielders on the pitch-, while wide and no ball are granted due to faults caused by the bowler.

A leg bye occurs when the ball touches any anatomy of the batsman, provided he is not in a LBW position and tries avoiding the touch or tries to hit the ball.
A bye occurs when the ball is not hit by the batsman's bat or any anatomy of his body and the batsman chooses to run.

A penalty can be granted on many instances like:
· A fielder fields the ball by any other means than by himself. For example: using his cap or any other clothing item.
· When the ball strikes a free lying helmet of the fielding side found on the pitch.
· When the ball touches such a fielder who has returned to the pitch without the umpire's permission.
· When the fielding side intentionally distracts or obstructs the batsman while batting.
· When the umpire concludes that the ball may have been tampered by the fielding side by many ways.

An umpire can grant a 'no ball' to the batting side when the bowler, the fielder or the wicket keeper commits an illegal action during bowling.
A wide is granted to the batting side when the ball is delivered too far for the batsman to strike it, provided he or his equipments do not touch the ball.
