Growing up my favorite super hero was the Incredible Hulk. Even today I admire the big green furious character because to me he physically symbolizes being the most complete super hero. You see the thing that made Dr. David Banner so strong was that he found a way to strengthen his weaknesses. He came up with a way to tap into his most complete physical makeup. In the world of strength and conditioning this is something that I find myself trying to do with folks all of the time. The good news is that if you want to be a physical specimen like the Hulk you can put your mind at ease because you don't have to inject yourself with gamma radiation in order to make it happen. Keep on reading if I have your attention.
Strengthening Your Weaknesses
In the world of strength and conditioning I always find myself searching for ways to "complete" an athlete. You have heard the old saying "That you are only as strong as your weakest link." This is very true when examining the human body. You see the muscles of our bodies work together as a unit or link. This link of muscles and segments are designed for the act of performing movement and if something is a bit off then things can go horribly wrong! For instance, if you have a weakness on one side of your body compared to another you might eventually sustain an injury. You can often see this in athletes that have sustained injuries in the past and then subsequently accrue new ones because of poor rehabilitation or lack of sound training to improve the weak link that they sustained before. Eventually the laundry list of problems continues to grow until that athlete is forced "to hang it up" or to go into retirement.
The one thing that I always preach to young and experienced (or older) athletes is to work on training your weaknesses. This is something that usually entails you having to work on what you like doing the least. What good is it going to be to you if you are great with a vertical leap, but lack the agility to get yourself into position athletically to use it. In order to display your strengths you have often got to have the "set up" from doing other things first. This is why I am huge on training movement patterns within the scope of my training program. Kettlebells provide me with this platform to share and teach athletes the value of movement and strength in a combined fashion. One of my favorite lifts or exercises to perform for the purpose of sharpening athletic mobility is the kettlebell Turkish get up. If you have ever executed this lift then you know exactly what I am talking about when referring to "mobility."
The Turkish get up is a lift that involves you starting out on your back lying on the ground with a weight lifted up in one arm. From this point you are to maintain the lifted weight above your head while keeping your arm fixed at a relative perpendicular angle to the ground as you strategically stand up to your feet and then return back to the lying position. This is as dynamic of a total body strength and conditioning lift as you can perform, especially if you are attempting to rid your body of imbalances and strengthen some of those weak links! If you are wanting to be a dominant athlete and try to compete with the Hulk then you have got to work on training those weak links my friend.
