If you have ever been on a long drive while in the company of a child then odds are you have heard those annoying little phrases come from the back seat asking, "Are we there yet?" or "How much longer till we get there? For some reason kids just don't enjoy long periods of time riding in a vehicle. They tend to get antsy and bored really quick. But don't fret. There is a solution. There are at least 5 surefire activities that I personally recommend that will keep almost any child busy for hours.
Next time you and your children are planning a long trip, be sure to bring the following items to pass the time.
1.) Doodle pad and crayons-- Kids love to be creative. This will allow them to use their minds and focus on their own creativity and off the boredom of the trip. Make it fun for them. Ask them to draw a picture of the scenery and see what they come up with.
2.) Hand held games-- These devices come in handy when on the road because it will keep your child occupied for hours while they test their skills and lose themselves in the fantasy of the game. These type of games include the Nintendo Gameboy and the Nintendo DS. The good thing about hand held games is that they are not that expensive. You can pick one up at your local department store for around 125-150 dollars.
3.) Portable DVD players-- This is one of my favorites. These devices can hang on the back of your headrest while your child watches their favorite video. Like the hand held games, the portable DVD player is not that expensive either. You can buy one for as low as 70 dollars. The good thing about videos is that they are usually around two hours long so you just bought yourself two hours of peace and quiet.
4.) Books-- Depending on your child's age, books can be a useful item to travel with. If they are not able to read yet then substitute a picture book instead. Kids can become fascinated with all the pictures and the story that a book possesses as they lose themselves in the fantasy of the story. Be sure to bring along a good assortment of them so they will have enough variety.
5.) Snacks-- These are also a good idea when travelling. These items can be cookies, chips, cupcakes, or poptarts. Depending on what time you are travelling this can also hold them off till dinner. Be sure to bring an empty bag for the trash. It can get messy.
These suggestions are nothing new to everyday life but have come in handy for me personally. You may take my advice or you can implore your own ideas but make it something that your child enjoys and you know that it will keep them occupied. The main idea is to keep them thinking about the activities and not the trip.
