How long does it take to send pictures from Mars?
And are there ever any "communications problems" between Mars and Earth -- like blackouts when the sun is between the two planets, or other disruptions?
I'm writing a science fiction story, maybe. Please add links if you have 'em.
It depends on time of year. Right now it's about 4-5 minutes each way for a command, then the actual picture images are streamed slowly. And, yes, there are blackouts. Black outs from solar activity and from Mars going around the other side of the sun.
At that time, when you can make contact it takes 20-24 minutes each way for a signal to come from or reach back to Earth.
Mars can be as far away as 260 million miles or as close as 34 million.
Right now it's about 45 million and separating daily
There's also only about a 4-6 month window in which we can currently travel to Mars (until we can build the Enterprise and go at full Impulse power) and travel time varies from about 120 days one way to as little as 45 days one way, depending on distance (Mars is 34 million every 5 years and 55 million in between that time at the 2.5 year point) and the window point. You generally start as Mars is closing on Earth and never when Mars is pulling away. You leave months before Earth and Mars are close and arrive there near close point and leave at or when close point occurs and never more than two weeks or so after close point.
This is based on current travel speeds of 25-35,000 MPH, which will change in the future as new propulsion technologies are made.
Right now it takes seconds to minutes to send one image bit by bit at the speed of light. This is largely due to low power transmitters on probes. At such a time when Man is on Mars and has Atomic Power Plants streaming time will be reduced to maybe about Internet live video feed quality.
But there will still be a 4-24 minute time lag due to distance. One way.
