Ex-Kop by Warren Hammond is a forties noir thriller for the twenty-first century. It's a terrific yarn, reminiscent of L.A. Confidential with Humphrey Bogart playing the lead. If you love crime novels and science fiction you'll find that this book is a winner on both counts.
The story takes place on Lagarto, an impoverished jungle planet in the far future where pornography, violence and police corruption are rampant. Juno Mozambe is an ex-kop and enforcer. He was forced to retire from the Koba Office of Police when the previous police chief was murdered. Now he's doing P.I. work and he's desperate for money to pay his wife's medical bills.
His ex-partner, Maggie Orzo, needs help with a case and offers to pay him. He agrees. Adela Juarez is a young girl who has been sentenced to death for the brutal murder of her parents but Maggie isn't convinced she's guilty. Juno investigates and finds evidence linking Maggie's new partner, Ian, to the girl as well as to a string of vicious murders. But Ian knows he's being watched and Juno may not live long enough to figure out the connection.
The characterization is excellent. Hammond populates his world with plenty of bad guys, but it's the morally gray characters that are especially interesting. Like the deeply flawed yet sympathetic hero, Juno. You'll forgive his brutal ways because he has no other choice. The failed economy on this watery planet makes for a dystopian world where the good guy rarely wins.
The down and dirty plot picks up where "Kop" ended but can stand alone. This is a fast read. Maybe the pages flew because I couldn't put it down, I loved it! It's not for the squeamish but if you don't mind treading into some dark territory you will find it's a hard-boiled page-turner.
