Star Wars is all about a single war.
That's an odd thing to say when you consider the long history of the Jedi, which is composed of a string of wars beginning from the discovery of the Force: the Hundred Year Darkness, the Great Hyperspace War, the Great Sith Wars, the Jedi Civil Wars, the Clone Wars and the subsequent Rebellion, and so on.
At the center of these wars stand two main players-the good Jedi and the dark Jedi, more commonly known as the Sith. Both Jedi and Sith are defined by their adherence to the light and dark sides of the Force, and these beliefs have put them in constant conflict with each other. For as long as the Jedi believe in the light, they will continue to oppose the Sith. Yet for every Sith defeated, another Jedi falls to the dark side, and the waltz continues-peace, gestation, war.
If Force-users were solely responsible for their own actions, one could lay the blame for this cycle on those Jedi corrupted by power. However, that isn't the case. There is one unnoticed dimension to the problem: apparently, the Force knows what it's doing.
The Jedi are "seduced" by the dark side. It has been known to fuel their darker emotions, influencing them to make decisions they may not have made with clear minds. On the other hand, many Jedi have also said that the light side guides their actions, going so far as to say that they are mere "tools" of the Force. Finally, there is the most famous example of all-Anakin Skywalker, conceived by the will of the Force itself. These examples point to the idea that the force is sentient.
Now consider: the Force chose Anakin to restore its balance, which according to prophecy, would happen if he destroyed all of the Sith. As it turns out, the prophecy was incorrect, if not an outright lie. Even after Anakin gave his life to destroy Palpatine, the cycle continued with the rise of several more Sith lords-Lumiya, Darth Caedus, Darth Krayt, and so on.
For even as the Sith were destroyed, the true cause of the imbalance remained-the dark side of the Force. As long as the dark side exists, so would the Sith. The light side may have eternity to seek balance, yet if it cannot or will not purge its own dark aspect, it can never achieve it.
This brings us to the core of the problem. The source of the conflict isn't the Force-users themselves, but the inherent duality of the Force. Here is a living, thinking entity composed of two opposing natures, both locked in a struggle without outcome. Worse, these two Forces do not oppose each other directly; they fight a proxy war through the Jedi and the Sith.
In our terms, it's no different from Cold War-era superpowers arming and funding smaller countries to fight their wars for them. These countries were eager to do battle given their new-found military strength, but did not see that they were sacrificing their lives for agendas they did not understand and were not to their benefit.
Seen in this light, the Jedi wars become pointless battles that escalate over time: armies, space fleets, and even entire planets are consumed by their conflict; the number of lives lost count up to the billions. It is sobering enough to make one wonder: to what end is the Force leading its followers? Is there one at all? And at what further cost will it pay to achieve it?
These are difficult questions and the answers may not be forthcoming. Yet only by asking them and reconsidering the nature of the Force can the Jedi begin to reshape their collective destiny, and find a way out of this destructive loop once and for all.
