A war that altered the image of North America, the War of 1812 commenced on June 18, 1812 and finished on March 23, 1815. The opposing parties in the conflict were the United States of America and the British Empire along with the Canadian Provincial Army. Numerous tribes also fought as allies of the British during this war.
The American War of Independence, commonly known as the American Revolution established the United States of America as an independent nation on the world map. However, even thereafter, the British did not restrict their level of interference in North America. This intrusion on the behalf of Great Britain irked the US. Another aspect that furnished way for the War of 1812 was the clash between the Amerindians and the United States of America on the subject of Indian sovereignty. The Amerindians became allies of the British during the war in the lure of attaining independent status.
Finally, it was the inconsistent trade policies between the French, British and Americans that also fired the probability of the War of 1812. The incompatibility of the trade policies owed their origin to certain laws passed by Napoleon pertaining to British vessels. As a consequence of these laws, the US economy suffered an immense set back as much of its trade was with Europe. Another policy that aggravated the situation was that the British took over all American ships wherein British sailors were on staff. As a result of this policy, towards the end of the year 1812, about 400 American vessels were under the control of the British authorities. Also, the War Hawks that formed a part of the Twelfth Congress of the United States of America immensely supported and pushed forward the idea of initiating a war against the British to resolve the contradictory issues.
The War of 1812 did not lead to any changes in the political map of the world. However, the only consequential aspect of the war was the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814 between the United States of America and the British Empire. As per this treaty, both parties agreed to release the prisoners of war. Also, the British conferred about 10,000,000 acres of land around Lake Superior and Michigan to the United States. Certain facets of the treaty such as establishing a neutral territory for the Indians and liberating slaves of their captivity, promised by the British were not followed as per the initial plan of action. However, after this war the United States abandoned their conflicts with the Amerindians and made efforts to grant them regular citizenship.
Also, this war aroused an awakening amongst the leaders of the US as the war projected lack of US military potential when pitched against the British. Consequently, the US stepped up its military policies and started concentrating on enhancing its military strength.
