For Dungeons and Dragons Enthusiasts: Where do I begin?
This is for you roleplaying fiends who are familiar with D&D: I have played many times before without really "getting it." I want to teach myself the game. There are some basic sets/beginner's sets for sale on ebay but they're the TSR version. Does it matter if I learn from TSR books or would you recommend Wizards of the Coast? Have the rules changed substantially since the early 1980s, when the TSR basic set was published? I want to learn the correct way -- I'd be the type of gamer who stuck religiously to the rules. Which books or sets should I purchase?
People prefer different editions based on their age or what video game they play. The closest a video game comes to AD&D 1st or 2nd edition is Baldurs Gate or Icewind Dale 1. If you like those games, you would probably like older versions of the rules. If you like Diablo or World of Warcraft better, go with later versions. They were made to be less like the original concept of the game and more like video games.
The designers at WoTC were playing Diablo when they came up with 3rd edition. They had to pay some car notes and wrung more money out of the fans by 'revising' the rules to edition 3.5.
After a few years they decide to make everyone's libraries obsolete and come out with 4th edition, based on World of Warcraft - the game they were playing at the time.
You're faced with a trade-off, something the old rules used a lot more than the new ones:
1a) You can get the shiny new rulebooks, because that's what everyone else is doing. You'll be able to get books and accessories easily and find players who are using them.
1b) In about 5 years, WoTC will tell you something is wrong with the rules you're using and that you need to buy a whole new set of books to play the game 'the right way'. And if you don't - all your friends will laugh at you.
2a) You can get an older rules edition - Basic to Immortals, AD&D 1st or 2nd, or 3e / 3.5e. With those you make the choice to buy the Players Handbook ONCE, and to ignore keeping up with the latest fashions from Renton. Most of the books and materials can be gotten cheaply unless their collector's items. You invest in your library once, and your done.
2b) The latest generation of gamers will laugh at you for using antique books and archaic rules, and they will tell you your character is broken and underpowered. You will be forced into the underground world of old-school gamers to find others who use the same rules editions you do. The materials and other gamers are harder to find - you'll probably have to use the internet to find both. You might even have to play over the internet.
