What should a new Dungeons and Dragons player buy?
I'm really interested in tabletop roleplaying games, and I'd love to try Dungeons and Dragons. But there are so many rule books and "flavor" books and different editions of each that it's hard to know what to get (not to mention they're quite expensive). So what should a completely new player buy to get started? What's necessary to play the game?
The first thing you're going to have to do is find some other people to play with. If you can join an established group, buy the basics of what they're playing.
The new player won't need the whole mess of books - just the Player's Handbook for whatever edition you're playing, a splat book (specialty book) if you want to try a character race, class or prestige class featured in it, and a set of dice. You can download character sheets for all the different editions online; just Google it.
If they're playing 4th edition, you'll need the Player's Handbook, and some dice. If you want to, you can pick up a supplement if they have a class you're interested in, but it is not necessary to have supplements to play the basic game and one of the standard races/classes.
There are a lot of groups still playing 3.5 or even earlier editions, and those books, though not being published any more by WOTC, are often still available used at game stores or through Amazon, or online as .pdf downloads.
Only if you become a DM will you need a Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manuals, etc. so you won't need those to start.
