Dungeons and Dragons - where to begin?
I've always been interested in starting dungeons and dragons as it looks good fun. What do I actually need to do it. I see that I need the Player Handbook, the Monster Rule book and the DM Guide - of which I would get the fourth edition. I know that I also need the dice. Is there anything else that I need? I see things like miniatures and game boards (things with grids) but i'm not sure if you need them or not.
I am in the UK and will probably not be joining an existing group. Me and a few friends are wanting to start one.
speaking only to your question it is extremely useful to have a grid board but not necessary grid paper works just as well though the former is cheaper in the long run. the miniatures can easily be replaced with chess pieces or some such as a visual aid (read ghetto gaming lol.) If you get a group that plays the same characters for any length of time it is fun for each player to own a miniature of themselves. One of the other answerer's said to look into other games understand that while this can be a good idea D&D is a great beginner course especially 4.0. but he is right that it is best to look into joining another group first WOTC the developers of D&D have a webs site that will allow you to get in touch with fellow gamers in your area or you can go to your local hobby shop and ask there.
