Known for their Hybrid like quality, Shamans are one of the most useful characters in World of Warcraft. Having the ability to heal, DPS and tank all at the same time, Shamans are an easy fit into any group out there. Many of their powers come from the natural elements, making all of their attacks extremely difficult to resist.
They are able to boost the stats of their fellow party members as well as contribute significant healing. In addition; Shamans are a powerfully strong melee class, with great ranged attacks as well. They can even tank if the situation calls for it.
A Shaman can be a great group member because of how versatile they are. Really, no matter what role is needed a Shaman can fill it and still provide a great deal of powerful support. The Shaman is strongest when in a group such as a raid, or a PvP battle group. This is where they shine, due to their wide range of powerful abilities.
They are a character that is easy to learn but very hard to master. While other characters have one, maybe two areas to practice, the Shaman has essential four areas to work on (both sets of DPS, healing and tanking) Shaman's have basically four areas to work on: ranged DPS, melee DPS, tanking and healing. Unlike other character classes that focus on one, maybe two specs. With so many things to keep in line, many players get burnt out trying to everything at once. The best advice is to focus on one or two aspects of the Shaman and make those your priority.
Shaman's are best known for the totems that they drop when ever in battle. These totems have several different functions, all there to enhance and help the Shaman. Without these totems the Shaman's powers become much weaker.
A Shaman can place four totems out at a time, each one having a specific power that will aid your group. This ability to mix and match your totems is what makes them one of the Shaman's most respected abilities. You are able to tailor which totems best suit you and your groups needs for each individual fight based on your enemy. Now you and your group have an added advantage against your target.
The limited range that your totems have can cause a problem when you are dealing with large and long fights. If you or any of your party members stray outside of the totem's range, then you will automatically lose the benefits of that totem. Placement is key with totems, never put them where the enemy can attack them easily, but also don't put them to far away you can't use their powers. If an enemy gets the chance, they will destroy your totems very easy. Don't expect to replace them in the middle of a fight so make sure they are out of the way.
Shamans are able to acquire by far the most potent spell with in Azeroth. This commanding spell is called Blood Lust and it will boost your entire groups attack speed, giving you and your group an increase of thirty percent haste for forty seconds. Many times Blood Lust will be the only way for a group of players to defeat certain high level enemies in raids.
A Shaman is allowed to wear mail armor, which is not the greatest protection but it is better than others. The spec you choose will decide if you like your armor or not. Melee and tank Shamans will not be happy with the limited mail armor, while ranged DPS and healing Shamans will love the extra protection. This is the main reason why Shaman's are such rare tanks. You will almost never see them as one; if they are they are usually an off tank helping control a weaker enemy.
With so many powerful spells Shamans can easily burn through their mana. It is the life blood for all of their abilities. You must always be aware of your mana consumption especially when you are leveling or facing high level bosses. This is where you can run into the most trouble. Use your mana regeneration totem to avoid running out.
It is hard to determine which talent build is the best one when you are considering being a DPS Shaman. The majority of players feel that Enhancement is your best decision, and as it is true that Enhancement is an easier spec to do DPS in, the best damage numbers come from Elemental Shamans. After you get over the initial hump of the weird rotation, you will soon find that you are doing more damage than anyone else. The talent build that is dedicated to healing is Restoration.
If you are still leveling your Shaman, it is common practice to use Enhancement as your talent build. The easier DPS rotation as well as the mana enhancement makes it easier for you to kill your enemies and move faster through levels. It will give you the highlights of a Shaman and allow you to get comfortable with their spells.
Having so many different spells and talents is a blessing and a curse. It makes Shamans powerful but difficult to master. Dedication is needed to play a Shaman, if you do not have the time or the will power, you will not be able to become a very powerful Shaman. The totems are the key to success for a Shaman and along with certain raid buffs; Shamans provide excellent support to other players. As the "filler" in many groups, Shamans are helpful and useful to any and all groups. Watch out when using your mana; make sure you have a mana regeneration totem placed for protection.
