Say what? What kind of name is this? I have never heard of this move.......well these are the thoughts that pop into the heads of about 60% of the people when they hear something about the movie. However it's a little known fact that this movie is the no.1 movie on IMDB, and yes, it did beat The Godfather. Inspired from a Stephen King novel TSR is one of those movies that leave you thinking about those small moments in life, the one's that really matter, the ones that everybody fails to notice. this is the movie that has spawned a thousand Morgan Freeman voice overs. It deserves to stand right next to The Godfather, Gone With the Wind, Citizen Cane and other classics in the pantheon of great films but for some reason the beauty of this masterpiece is not seen by all. the movie tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) who is wrongfully accused of murdering his wife and her lover and is sentenced to consecutive life sentences at the Shawshank prison in Maine. it portrays Andy spending nearly two decades in the prison and his friendship with red (Morgan Freeman).
Some of the scenes portrayed in the movie are quite sickening to say the least but the way these scenes have been executed is the difference between any other prison movie and TSR. TSR instills a sense of hope inside everyone that keeps doing what you do, keep trying, because one of these days dreams will become a reality, as in the move. I am throwing a bit of a spoiler by saying that the move will have a good ending but the ending is the most beautiful part of the movie and I just could not resist. The direction is top notch. This quite easily is frank dragon's best work, without doubt.
And now the performances, Tim Robins delivers one of his most endearing performances as Andy Dufresne.I mean you root for the character and feel his pain, share his joy. He truly deserved an Oscar, which unfortunately he did not get. Morgan freeman got one though and boy, did he deserve it or what? He is fantastic as red, who is just an ordinary guy just that he's killed someone. His performance and especially his voice over towards the end of the movie is heart warming. The cinematography is excellent, editing is crisp which was crucial for this move because it tends to get slow at times but the thoughtful dialogs keep the going ones interesting. Now a confession, I never cry, especially while watching a movie but this movie was the closest thing that I have come to crying while watching a movie and yes it is the ending, I was smiling broadly but I could feel my eyes were watery, not because of some tragedy but out of genuine joy. That's the thing about this movie, it gets you so emotionally involved.all in all this movie is a true cinematic masterpiece and I beg to all who have read this review to immediately see this movie as soon as possible because we only live once and the Shaw shank redemption truly is a once in a life time kind of movie. Go see it and hope because fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free.
