This 34-mile round-trip trail takes 1.5 hours to complete just within the Clallam County around the Olympic National Park which is also South of US 101 and on the southeastern section of Port Angeles. This drive takes you to Blue Mountain which has an elevation of 6,007 feet and the trail climbs up to a high ridge. The views around this area are of the glacier peaks, river valleys, and the sub-alpine tundra. These are the scenes from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Vancouver Island and also from the Puget Sound to Mount Baker.
This driving trail is easy and has a good clearance from the road since the initial 8.6 miles along the way is paved. The driving season on this trail is longer as it is typically not affect by so much snow. Nonetheless, the road 2.5 miles below the campground is closed to vehicles by early October due to the weather. Thus, call the Olympic National Park ranger first or check with one who is stationed at the campground. There is also a visitor's map provided upon paying the $10 entrance fee which is already a good visual guide for this trail. The Deer Park is also a venue which is good for camping, hiking, picnicking and photography.
To get to the trail head, start at the US 101 which is east of Port Angeles and proceed to milepost 253 until reaching the Deer Park Road. From US 101 highway, it then continues moving south until reaching the trail head. From there, follow the two-lane road as it climb toward mountains. The trail then moves forward into a park and at the end of the pavement, the road ascends gradually through a forest.
Move past road banks lined with ferns and moss as the path joins the Olympics. Expect to get a glimpse of the river valleys, stretch of ridgelines, forests, glacier or snowy mountain peaks. Around 15 miles on this road, the trail begins to narrow and becomes steeper on a slope where the Vancouver Island can be seen from afar.
A distant view of the craggy, snow-capped, and glacier peaks of the Olympic Mountains welcome you as the road moves further until reaching the campground and the ranger station. Still follow an ascent toward the road's end where a vantage point awaits you. This viewpoint is at an elevation of 5,600 feet. There is a parking area nearby wherein from here you can take 0.5 of a mile toward the Rain Shadow Trail. Then you can make a loop around Blue Mountain back to the trailhead.
Whether you enjoy a scenic drive off the beaten path or hard core off-roading it is always a good idea to have a reliable form of communication in case of emergency or breakdown. At Thor's Cb Radio we carry a variety of uhf, vhf and CB radios for sale. Remember with any radio the most important part is always the antenna so having the right antenna and CB antenna mounts can make all the difference.
