It's fun to make terrain for your Warhammer 40k battlefields, but sometimes you just don't have the time. That's OK! You can do a pretty good job with selecting ready made materials from your local hobby store. You're going to need a suitable ground cover, some basic items to break up line of site and provide area cover, and then maybe a few things to add interest. Playing your miniatures on a battlefield with great 40k terrain will make your games much more fun!
For ground cover, you've got a few choices. You could just play on the counter top, but that's just not EXCITING. 40k terrain has got to be fun! Better choices are to use a table cloth, or buy some cloth at the local fabric store (check out the remnants and sales sections), or some actual ground sheet from Games Workshop or the local hobby store (you'll find it in the train section). I've got all three at hand at home. My favorite is some organic green cloth that has a sort of texture that does a suitable job of looking like grass. For line of site, the easiest and fastest thing is to just buy some readymade trees at the hobby store. Woodland Scenics is a great brand with a wide range of products - different styles and different trees. Battlefield in a Box from Gale Force 9 has some nice trees, too. You might get sticker shock when you look at the cost of plastic trees - but then, you don't really need that many. For a 6'x4' table, even two clumps of three trees each is good. Just make sure to get some that are suitably larger than your models - 5-7" trees are nice. You can fasten them to the table with some blue tac to keep them from falling over.
Buildings are a nice touch, too. These break up line of site and provide cover. If you've got kids, you might find some suitable stuff in their toy box. Make sure to ask permission first, of course. Many games stores have scratch built items for sale - these may seem pricy, but then you're getting a custom product that will be usable over and over. Just make sure that what you buy works for your models - not too small, not too big.
Then you've got items to add interest, and sometimes restrict movement. You can use cut out blue paper or cloth to represent rivers; brown paper or cloth for roads. Your kid's toy box (don't have any suggestions if you don't have kids) might have some things that work. Rocks can be really nice, too, believe it or not. And depending on where you live, you might find some suitable moss hanging from trees that will make nice bushes.
In all, you only need one 40k scenery item per four square feet. So, a 6'x4' table might be well off with only six items. Two buildings, two clumps of trees, and a couple of odd bits. You might be surprised what you can do with only $30 dollars or so, and $100 will make an awesome 40k battlefield.
