If you eat 25 pounds of food, will you gain 25 pounds?
I was watching Tobiashi or whatever his name is...you know the world champion eating guy from Japan or something. Anyway...he sat down for practice and apparently ate over 20 pounds of food in one sitting. Does this mean immediately afterwards he weighed over 20 pounds more than before he ate? I would assume so...but it seems a bit strange. How does this work? Converting food to energy...and stuff like that...anyways...anyone know about this?
PS -- I understand that you lose weight through using a toilet. Haha. I was wondering if actually do gain that weight immediately...because it seems crazy but it must be true.
Yes. Matter cannot be created or destroyed, therefore if you consume 25 pounds of something you will - at least temporarily - gain 25 pounds of weight. You will quickly lose most of it through the body's natural elimination processes (defecation, urination, persperation, or as in the case of the Japanese guy, regurgitation), and you will lose a very small bit because of the caloric energy required to do the eating, but basically if you put 25 pounds worth of something in your body you will weigh 25 pounds more for a bit.
The flip side of this question is one that bugs many dieters - even intelligent ones. And that is that in order to gain one pound of weight, you must consume AT LEAST one pound of something. I've had dieters argue passionately that they can gain more weight than the weight of the food they consume, but it's simply not possible. It's back to the physical laws of conservation of mass and energy. You cannot magically produce weight without consuming it in some form, so if you've gained a pound it means that whether or not you were paying attention or want to admit it, you consumed at least a pound of something.
