How does High Dynamic Range work?
I'd like to know what is the principle of High Dynamic Range aka HDR. I know you get a picture with little lighting, then the same picture with more lighting and mix them together somehow and you get a really cool effect (like the ones seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/hdr/clusters/ )
But HOW to do that? What are the steps to be taken? What are the commands to use?
I'm using Paint Shop Pro 9 and I'd really like to learn how to get that effect. Please help.
There are a few tutorials on this on the net, but in a nushell, this is what it's all about:
A digital camera can only encode a limited range of 'brightnesses'. It encodes the data by giving each level of brightness a number from 0 to 255 (0 is dark and 255 is bright) So if a picture has some very light parts and some very dark parts, the camera will have a hard time getting all the detail across the range as it's only got 256 levels to play with.
Taking a High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture is a way to overcome this. Generally you take 3 pictures of the same thing (without moving the camera). The 1st is underexposed, the 2nd correctly and the 3rd over exposed. The 1st gets the detail in the bright spots, the 2nd in the mid-range and hte 3rd in the dark parts.
The trick is to combine all these pictures together, keeping the detailed parts of the pictures and throwing away the rubbish bits. The result is that you end up with 1 picture with an extended range of detail.
Photoshop CS2 has a tool for creating these pictures automatically that works quite well.
